Nearly 20 statues in Downtown Salina that comprised the 2011 Salina Sculpture Tour are gone. The sculptures were removed Saturday, in preparation of a group of brand new ones that will be unveiled in May as the 2012 Salina Sculpture Tour.

Last May, nineteen sculptures went on display throughout the downtown area of Salina as part of the sculpture tour. Artists place their sculptures in the program for one year, and all sculptures are aggressively promoted to the public for sale. The public is also invited to vote for their favorite piece.

The sculpture tour is no cost to the City of Salina, other than an agreement to pay up to $15,000 each year for the sculpture that receives the most votes from the public as their “People’s Choice” favorite.

"Watch Dog" by Louise Peterson was the “People's Choice” winner in the inaugural Salina Sculpture Tour. "Watch Dog" is valued at $19,000, but the artist has agreed to sell it to the city for $15,000. "Watch Dog" will now be permanently placed in a sculpture garden at the Salina Botanical Gardens in Oakdale Park.

The 2012 Salina Sculpture Tour will debut on May 19th. This year there will be twenty-five sculptures on display throughout the downtown area, six more than last year.

I didn't like all of the sculptures this year, hope that some of the ones coming soon are more like what I like. Yes...no cost other than 15,000, which I thought was nice that people got to vote on which one to buy.

I thought the sculptures were beautiful and added some nice flair to downtown Salina, much like downtown Wichita. I look forward to the new tour of sculptures and hope they're just as beautiful as the last.

I LOVE the sculpture tour. It's great to have such beautiful art in downtown Salina. Thanks, Sculpture Tour Salina Committee, for getting this going! I can't wait to see what you bring in for this year!

Can't wait to see more even if it's just to upset some of you GRUMPY people. Anything that brings traffic downtown with the possibility of money being spent is a plus. I also look forward to seeing the next tour.I'll make a point to see the watch dog in Oakdale park and then go for coffee downtown, supporting small business in my town.

I agree, I liked seeing the art downtown. Not all were my taste, which is why I am glad the city got the opinion of others before they purchased the art. Supporting our local businesses is very important. Rather support a local than someone who lives in a different state.

I think that the city could find something else more important to spend money on than some stupid sculptures that look like c*&#. I stopped going downtown when the last ones was placed there, guess downtown don't need me or any of my friends business.
