Police say a visit to the veterinarian revealed the dog had a broken jaw.

Police are investigating after a dog's jaw is broken.

Police were contacted by the owner of a mixed breed dog after a visit to the vet revealed his pet had a broken jaw.

Mike Koop of Manhattan was visiting family in Salina and left his dog in the backyard. When they returned to the house at 612 Morningside - the family found the dog injured.

The owner told police he took the dog to a veterinarian after the pet stopped eating.

Police say the dog may have been struck with an unknown blunt object.

Ok, so whomever hit this dog needs to be punished....no justification for abusing an animal! HOWEVER, with that being said....did they leave a dog that barks constantly unattended in the back yard for a long period of time?? Because THAT is not cool either! But instead of hurting the dog, I would've called in a complaint on them....and gave them an earful when they got home. But hitting the poor dog....only a jerk does that.

Only puffers and cowards do things like this. The same type of people that kill children.

I sure hope they catch the bum that did this!!! That poor dog, I cannot imagine what this poor innocent animal was thinking when the moron did this to him/her!! Any abuse to an animal should be an automatic felony charge!!

Junior is slowly recovering, but has to take daily visits to the vet for fluids and supplements. I'm fairly positive who is to blame since this person was in my mothers back yard attaching a privacy fence to her. chain-link fence. Hopefully justice will be served. Junior is a very friendly well mannered and quiet dog that only weighs 20 pounds. thanks for the support and comments.

micheal: I'm so sorry someone from our community did this to Junior!! I'm glad you know who may have done this, I hope law enforcement pursues them and brings them to justice. I'm happy to hear he is on the mend, we will keep him in our prayers.

I wish that man had tried to hit a trained police dog... he may have just gotten what was coming to him. Instead, he was cowardly enough to hurt a family animal who could not defend themselves. The dog was just visiting.. not a barker. No excuse for someone like that. I hope he is convicted and will not ever want to show his face in Salina again. I can't imagine what that man is capable of if he could do that to an innocent animal.

kadonia, I agree, anyone willing to do something like this to a poor defenseless animal must be lacking a moral compass!! However, in my many years, it's my experience that any person that will do something so horrible to an innocent being, is a chickens@#$!!! If this individual was to ever encounter someone other than an animal/child or a weaker person, they would never have the testicles to abuse a stronger person. It's my hope this individual ends up in our system with people that are much tougher than them, they will no doubt get a taste of what they dished out to this poor dog!!!

I am so sad for Junior...senseless brutality against a deeply cared for family pet is disgusting and has no place in our community. What is wrong with someone who would just smash a friendly dog's jaw for NOTHING?!?! This dog is special and a cherished part of a family! What a crime and a horrible waste to destroy that in a vicious act because, " I am in a bad mood and feeling mad at my neighbors...so hey, yeah, I will just kill their smiley, bouncy, tail waggin' dog with this piece of steel." I hope for peace and justice for Junior's family.
