After years of helping parents install child safety seats in vehicles, Saline County Sheriff's Dept. is now a state certified Fitting Station.

The Saline County Sheriff's Department is certified as a Child Safety Seat Station.

According to Sheriff Glen Kochanowski, the Saline County Sheriff's Department has been certified by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office as a Child Passenger Fitting Station.

Kochanowski tells KSAL News the distinction comes after years of helping parents understand how to use the seats.

"We've been reaching out to the community for a long time to make sure folks know how to install the seats properly," he said.

Sheriff's Department Records Clerk, Marilyn Marshall approached the KTSRO earlier this year to keep up with the changes in safety seat regulations.

Marshall says that State Farm Insurance helped train and certify two Saline County Deputies and herself.

"We'll inspect the seat, we'll make sure it fits with the car. We'll also teach the parent or guardian how to install the seat in case they need to move it," she said.

Marshall became interested in helping with child seats when she realized that often times deputies were out in the field when someone needed assistance with a car seat.

Marshall added that no appointment is necessary, and encourages those who want to make sure their seats are safe to stop in at Saline County Sheriff's Office Monday through Friday - 8am to 5pm.

"If that doesn't work I'll make an appointment and meet with them on the weekend."

The Saline County Sheriff's Department was certified as a Child Passenger Fitting Station on May 10, 2012.

I'll be glad to see people utilizing this. I often see new moms with carseats that rock back and forth or move quite a bit while placing the child in or taking them out and I don't think most people realizes that a carseat should be so tight that it really doesn't move without great force, or it won't work properly.

what a waste of time an money. very few if any will use this service. they should be out patroling what they are being paid to do not screwing around with car seats that other agencies already have people doing.
