A standoff Thursday morning prompted Salina Police to close a portion of Markley Road for several hours.

Police and fire units were called at around 9:00 to a home on Brookfield Street, in a new addition just off Markley Road.

Authorities say that a suicidal person had locked themselves in a room and was refusing to come out.

Police and EMS responded, and blocked off the area because of a possible toxic mixture of chemicals inside the home.

Markley Road was closed from just south of Dean Evans Stadium to Magnolia Road. The closed portion of Markley is part of detour for a construction project on Magnolia, and caused drivers to find another alternate route.

During the noon hour a coroner arrived on the scene. Markley Road was reopened.

No names, or other details, were immediately released.

I have always wondered why we blow these things out of proportion. If someone wants to be left alone then let's just leave them alone. They will come out when they get hungry.

These always stem from something else. The person was either making threats, resisting arrest, or any other action that necessitated the escalated show of force. There is a very good chance that there are also others in the building. These officers are there to put themselves between the person in question and the rest of us. Also, be grateful that you live somewhere that this is "big news". Some places have the swat team on the street at all times and they get as many calls as the other officers. God go with you officers...

And alarming :)

When most of your time is writing tickets what would one expect when something like this happens. There was no reason to block Marjory road when none of the surrounding houses were evacuated. Then as usual the law enforcement people refuse to be truthful which is BS. If Meth was being made then say so plain and simple. Commissioners send city manager you continue to ignore the closng of Magnolia and when something else like this happens then taxpayers are inconvenienced even more.

Thanks to the Salina PD for keeping our city safe! To those that like to sit here and judge...you could always go and become an officer and see what it is really like! If the coroner was called in this was a serious situation.

Iamgonnagetu: http://www.salina.com/news/story/homes-evacuated-5-24-12 Pretty sure they wouldn't just close down Markley for the fun of it. There was clearly a security threat so they did what they had to.

Obviously those making ignorant coments have never lost a family member to a suicide. Maybe you should take moment to think of the family members left behind in this tragedy instead.

@Iam, What part is untruthful? First of all officers have a responsibility in what information is immediately shared with the public and most officers don't have the authority to spout off the whole story for looky loos, its more like a "need to know" type thing. Were you referring to the chemicals possibly being method chemicals. That's your assumption? Its nit so. The chemicals referrerto were being used to attempt/commit suicide, not to make method. Lastly, the surrounding homes were evacuated. @unnamed, the DTF are officers. Officers are expected to respond to calls. DTF was probably full of officers well versed in home entry and standoffs. You want the p.d. to apologize because the DTF offficers don't waste valuable time trading out their everyday vehicles for a black and white beat car? DTF shows up to emergencies, that doesn't mean the location is a crack house. It just means that they are operating under their scope of responsibilities in their assigned vehicle.

To @Iam and others like you... In case you didn't read the story or are just purely insensitive... this story is about a person that died. The family members read these articles when they are published on the site. They read your insensitive comments and are sickened. I know, because I have had it happen to me. Please, have respect for the family and friends of the deceased and hold off on the comments on these types of articles.
