Over 250 Tickets Handed Out for Seat Belt Violations
Jeff Garretson - Mon 12:56 PM 06/04/2012
Police handed out 258 tickets during the two-week period with 6-of the citations going to drivers who had an unsecured child in the vehicle.
"Click it or Ticket," keeps Salina Police busy.
Salina traffic officers issued over 250 tickets for seat belt violations around the city.
Lt. Russ Lamer tells KSAL News the operation aimed at seat belt violators ran between May 21st and June 2nd.
"We were disappointed in the number of people who were not buckled up, and we would sure like to see people buckle up rather than issue citations."
Adults who are not wearing a seat belt in a moving vehicle can be cited and charged a $10 fine.
Police handed out 258 tickets during the two-week period with 6-of the citations going to drivers who had an unsecured child in the vehicle.
Lamer says that fine is $60 plus court costs.
During the program police also issued thirty-one other unrelated tickets, made 7-arrests plus two DUI arrests.

The police should be so proud. Tell the citizens during this same period how many crimes were committed? Also how many of those crimes have been solved?

I agree with Iamgonnatgetu-they should be proud---and what about the breakins/robberies/shoplifting. I personally feel seat belts (on adults) should be an option. We know the consequences of wearing seatbelts-I had two very good friends die (wearing seat belts) because they couldn't get out of the vehicle. It should be our choice for seatbelts - not a law where tickets can be issued and it is easy money --- go after the thieves so people can feel secure and safe in their homes, leaving cars parked on streets etc.

How many man hours spent to write 250 $10 tickets? How much did this cost taxpayers? I can ride a motorcycle with no helmet all day long, but drive a car with a reinforced roof and be a criminal subject to financial penalties. Who thinks this crap up?

All citizens have the right to file a complaint with the Police Chief on any police officer for not wearing their seat belts or other issues too, if it necessary. They have to abide by the laws just like we do. Get the police cars tag number. File a complaint with the Police chief. Follow in a couple days. Use your cell phone, so you keep a record of the number you called and the time. Keep journal of what the police chief says. Date it If nothing is done about it then go the Attorney General. If the Attorney General does his job he will investigate the complaint. You may need to call the Attorney General several times to confirm that he has read your complaint. Ask hime to follow up on your complaint. I did this one time and got a Police Officer from Lindsborg terminated off the force. Don't quit until you succeed.

I would hope more would complain if you thunk officers aren't doing their jobs...That said, click it or ticket enforcement is called special enforcement and officers take an extra duty to participate, during overtime hours, not during their normal shift.

So let’s pay all these extra police officers overtime to hand out $10.00 dollar tickets. Hmm makes a lot of sense to me. No wonder they don’t have enough money for the new jail they want.

This program is federally funded with money that can only be used for traffic safety efforts. So the city of Salina isn't footing the bill and neither is Saline County S.O. (who would be interested in the jail).

First let me reply to ronniemur last stupid comment. This genius says this was federally funded and did not cost salina any money. Well where in the heck does the federal money come from? The answer is everyone that pays taxes Ronnie so this cost salina a pretty penny.

My comment was directed @ tdontlie's comment that because we have this program we don't have the money for "the new jail they want". The monies are totally seperate. The jail funding and the traffic program money are seperate. One who uses the word stupid instead of just rebutting makes their own statements sound foolish. The city of salina's budget doesn't pay for this program.

So let me get this straight Ronnie. Because one comes from the feds and one (the jail) will likely come from local taxpayers. Ummm...isn't that where the feds get thier money too. YOU are the one that sounds foolish. Taxpayer money is taxpayer money whether it goes through the Feds, State, County OR City first. It all came from the same place...the taxpayer. Oh that's right, over 40% of our wonderful society pays no net taxes...so some of us work hard and foot the whole bill.

well ronniemur do you think federal or state monies would not be used to build a jail. Of course you probably do not pay taxes as I am sure ksal does not pay you to be on here 24/7 making stupid remarks. I do not see a jail in salina's future especially if the old fart is re-elected. Yes I used stupid also as if I used what I really wanted to call you it would be deleted.

I do not see that Lamer cop coming up with any crime figures he was asked for. Probably to busy over at Magnolia and Ohio giving out tickets and that is not federally funded.

Since when is it illegal, immoral, or unethical for a police officer to park on a private parking lot or talk on a cell phone? Encouraging hostility towards local law enforcement will likely get you just what you deserve. The police are not our enemy, they are here to help us. Morons like you spend too much time listening to talk radio. Perhaps if you went out and got a real job you'd find better things to do with your time than stalking police and trying to get them fired. By the way, stalking is exactly the behavior you are advocating, and it is a felony. Go right ahead, see how it turns out. Then our tax dollars will be going towards keeping idiots like you in jail.

@ tlastmus: If you're so concerned about police wasting taxpayer funded time, why are you calling in frivolous complaints for them to investigate? How about letting the chief do his job and letting the officers spend their time on the streets? I personally would love to hear it when you call the police chief to make some ridiculous allegation and he tells you to go pack sand. Then you call the attorney general and he tells you the same thing. If you want to complain about a civil rights violation or a crime of some sort, that's a different matter. But for trivial little things, the police chief doesn't want to hear you. The attorney general doesn't want to hear you. The people who read these boards don't want to hear you. How about you surf back to your gay porn sites and let our men and women in uniform do their jobs.

You people that are so negative towards law enforcement must have had criminal backgrounds and maybe still practice breaking laws no matter how trivial or serious they may be. Why can't you find positive in your hearts? Why do you have to bash the SPD all the time? Why can't you accept that laws are made for protection and safety? To those of you that back up the SPD and SCSD thank you. I am sure that they appreciate the positive feedback and remarks. I used to hear the negativity about all city workers when I worked for Salina Engineering. Sometimes it was hard to let it fly by but then I realized whom was saying the negative and laughed when they got ticketed or caught doing a crime. Negativity usually falls back on the person that is practicing it.

Well hillbilly so you worked for salina engineering I sure would want people to know that. It is people like you that close roads completely for 7 months that has some 9000 cars a day travel on it. With engineers like this we would do better without them. As a taxpayer I am negative about lawenforcement when they do not do the jobs they were hired to. We are currently having a crime spree in our area but the chief of police seems to think giving out seat belt tickets is more important and he will send out four units to magnolia to give our tickets. This is not good use of the department. The seat belt law is nothing more than a money law for the state to receive federal funds. The magnolia trap is nothing more than to penialize the taxpayers and deny them the usuage of roads built with taxpayer monies. Negativity usually brings change as well as it should.

risingr the chief do his job that's a laugh all he does is sit on his butt and collect a check. What he is doing is letting crime get out of control. One thing he has done is go after the grind and that was because our so called city manager had a problem with the grind being where it was across the street from the city managers office. The way he went about that was suspect and if the owner of the grind was not a dumb a** there would have been a major lawsuit against the city. That dude saved the chief's job by being stupid. Now the chief has the city manager by the nads for doing him a favor so figures his job is secure.

Lamer should have been taken off the force years ago but is one of the chief's favorites. This guy has problems and needs to be removed and is another reason for the lack of support for the current salina pd. It is time for a shake up so we can get someone compenent running the PD. Giving tickets should not be top priority curtailing crime should be.
