Deputy Thwarts Copper Theft
KSAL Staff - Fri 11:21 AM 06/08/2012
A Saline County Sheriff Deputy thwarts a crime in progress early Friday morning.
Salina Police say that just after 4:00 in the morning the deputy was on patrol on east Crawford Street. He saw a car turn into the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The car had on top of it a large, industrial spool with 3,000 feet of copper wire on it.
The deputy turned around, but when he arrived at where the car stopped the occupants had fled on foot.
Along with the spool on top of the car, police also recovered two smaller spools of copper wire from inside the car.
The wire was taken from Great Plains Manufacturing at 1525 East North Street. Its value is placed at $4,700.
No arrests had been made by mid-morning Friday, but police do have suspects in the case.

Well the Hi-def cameras mounted atop the construction site should give clear image of the perpetrator? Or the other dozens of cameras on the campus? Or wait, just arrest the owner of the car, I think he works there too! He has been arrested a half dozen times in the past year anyway!

You would have to be an idiot not to realize a car coming down the road with a pallet with a large spool of wire on top is probably stolen. One thing that confuses me is when the sheriffs department catches you speeding they can turn around on a dime to catch you. But this deputy could not do that in this case and the people escape. How long will it take them to catch these guys?

Well there are idiots born everyday, this proves they come out of the wood work in the wee hours!! Why not steal a truck to haul it on, wouldn't draw quite as much attention sitting in a truck vs on top of a car!!

So in all fairness to the Deputies, no matter what or how, they caught them!!! Sure, it was probably pretty hard to ignore a bright red car coming down the street with a big spool of copper wire on its roof, they could have ignored them and went on down the road for a snack, but they chose to stop them and see why someone was hauling a huge spool around--LOL--on the roof of a car!!! What a bunch of idiots!!! They need to submit this to the dumbest criminals show!!

Let me get this straight. The deputy is driving west on crawford at 4 am so there is very little traffic if any on the four lane road. He see's this car coming with a spool of wire but he is unable to make a u turn right then and there to go after the car with all this weight on the roof and these dummies have the time to be so far ahead of him that he cannot capture any of them when they abandon the car and run off. ONCE AGAIN THE SHERIFF DEPARTMENT DROPS THE BALL. NOW ITS BEEN 2 DAYS STILL NO ONE ARRESTED. AND THIS SHERIFF WANTS TO BE RE-ELECTED!!!!
