Effort To Repeal Salina Ordinance Change Begins
Associated Press - Wed 07:53 AM 06/13/2012
A Wichita-based group has begun an effort to repeal a Salina ordinance change that outlaws discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Robert Noland, executive director of the Kansas Family Policy Council, said the group met Monday night to distribute petitions and instructions for collecting signatures.
The petition asks city commissioners to repeal a decision in May to protect people from discrimination in employment, public accommodation and housing based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. The change took effect June 4.
If the group gathers enough signatures, city commissioners will have 20 days to address the issue or call for a special election. The city would pay for the election unless it is included on the primary or general election ballot.

Been waiting a long time for this. Ready to sign up first the ordinance then the commissioners especially that turncoat Aaron.Someone should tar and feather him and run him out of town. He now wants to build a new health department building evidently he owns some land he can fanagle someway to get the city to buy. This guy wants to raise our taxes to do so. He also enjoys the police giving out tickets to everyone down at magnolia and ohio. speaking of which is it not funny how no one is doing anything about that issue? I think there were a few people from the city manager on down that has some personal involvement here. This company they hired cannot do this job in a fast and efficent way. Anytime I take a look at what is going on out there they only have a half dozen people on site and 2 or 3 of those standing around with arms crossed watching. No wonder this is going to take 7 months to finish.

I will also sign this to get it before the public. The trouble with signing, as I understand it, is that they are going door to door to get the signatures, which will probably happen while most of us are at work. If there is a place I can go to sign, please let me know as the media once again doesn't say. Even if the public vote against it, you will see it passed in time, some backdoor way. Just wait and see, along with the River project.

It seems like no one is concerned that a group from WICHITA is trying to tell us how to live here? They don't live here, so why should we have anything to do with what they have to say? If you don't like the ordinance, start your own. Vote for like-minded people. Run for office. But do we need these people from WICHITA to "show us the way"? It would be like us telling Abilene what to do, when they have their own citizens for that.

I was at the meeting Monday night and am one of the many volunteers that will be collecting signatures. More information will be available later as to where you can go sign the petition. You must be a registered voter in the city of Salina and your name and address needs to be current with the Kansas Voters Registration. If you need to update this information please do so several days before signing the petition. The website is voteks.org and you can make changes or register to vote online. As far as these people from Wichita coming into Salina to help us with this we need to be thankful. They have the knowledge and resources to help us with this. The Kansas Family Policy Council is not just helping Salina. They are working diligently in other cities in Kansas to fight this movement. Please keep in mind that this is all volunteer work and be thankful for the help.

djirsas let me address your comments. we here in Salina never needed a group such as the one in Wicita. Everyone here lived in harmony that is until a couple of renegade gays worked their way onto the heritage commission in order to take care of there own agenda. Then they had a lawyer no one ever heard about jump onto the wagon because she had to get her name out there so she could run for office in topeka. Our weak commissioners are not educated to see this coming down the pike so they go against the taxpayers and vote this in. I for one am glad these people stepped in to help us out so your comments basically are not valid.

Why is everyone having such a problem with this ordinance? They aren't hurting anyone, they just want what is fair. Sorry but I just do not see the problem.

I don't understand why people in Salina, or Kansas for that matter, are so closed-minded. What does it hurt for everyone to be treated fairly? MRH60...it is sad. Let's make our state look more like hicks than we already do. Come on people! Move into the 21st Century. Have a little tolerance. Its really pretty easy. When you are sitting in church talking about love & tolerence & WWJD, remember you can take it with you and PRACTICE it.

There was no reason on earth that this should have been brought up here in Salina. There was not one case of any problem with the gays. If there were many instances of abuse I could see it but there is no more abuse in Salina for this group of people than anyother group.

One other point I discussed this with three people who are gay that I am very good friends with. These are people that spend time with my family during the year or the holidays and are gainfully employed. They were not in agreement on how this all took place. They did not like how Gina McDonald was so under handed on how she went about this. So folks we cannot lump all gays together on this issue as many believe the same as we do that the ordinance was not needed.

Yes everyone run and hurry to support Phil Cosby and his group! Just in case you do not know who the leader of this group is, it is Phil the one that used to live in Abilene and went after the Lions Den, and Priscilla's. How much tax money did he waste on that. But nothing brings out the hates and the bigots like a group bent on forcing another group to it's will and using the bible as an excuse. When this is upheld by the commission then what are you going to do?

masterjace that is exactly what you gays did in salina. forcing another group to do what you wanted. The commission will have to set it to vote and you know very well this will be voted down. THEN WHAT WILL YOU DO? MOVE TO SAN FRAN AND ENJOY YOURSELF.

The problem is not that people are gay, the problem is if a person hires a gay person and they cannot do the job they will not be able to fire them because they will say I am gay and you are discriminating against me or if you rent to them and they tear up the property hey I am gay you cannot evict me.

Here is my standpoint on the issue. I can see what the commission was trying to do and I do think that it's a step in the right direction, however, because there are people who will abuse this new ordinance (and some who already have) people are up in arms about it. All it takes are a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. Also, I'm tired of people being out for blood over this, at the end of the day we're all just people.

Nicegurl_14 how have some abused the ordinance? Why should we not be out for blood over this especially how it was handled. When people get on the heritage commission with a personal agenda then an unknown attorney jumps into the fray to make a name for herself to run for office and finally people we elected go against the wishes of the majority of the city how is this fair. If you feel we are all just people then you are in for a rude awakening.
