Salina Police are investigating after two bicycles are stolen.
According to Lt. Scott Siemsen, a mountain bike on S. 2nd and another on N. 8th were recently reported stolen.
Police were called to 227 S. 2nd after the bike's owner told officers that sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday the Trek 3900 mountain bike was taken from the backyard.
The owner told police the green bike, had been locked up - it's valued at $1,100. Police are also looking for a Trek mountain bicycle that was taken from an alley in the 100 block of N. 8th.
The owner told police the orange bike was chained to a pole on Wednesday around 6pm. When the rider returned to the alley about 30-minutes later the bike was gone. Total loss is listed at $800.

There are too many homeless walking the streets now. Not a good idea to be leaving values laying around outside.

This is not a theft by a homelesss person. These bikes were stolen by someone who knew their value and possibly knew where the owners lived-probably a fellow biker with low ethics.

There was a report on this subject recently on one of the news shows, 20/20 or dateline or one of those. This is a HUGE business in all parts of the U.S. they watch the bikes for a little bit, if owner doesn't return, they cut the locks, remove the wheels etc... and away they go, some are rode away some loaded into trucks/cars and hauled away. They did a sting and arrested quite a few people stealing these high end bicycles. In the current state of our economy, anything with any value is at risk of being stolen. We all need to be pro-active at securing our valuables so these crooks don't steal them. We certainly cannot expect the law enforcement in our community to catch the thieves, they are too busy writing tickets!! And, no, I do not suspect a homeless person, although they do bring them from the gospel mission by the van loads and dump them off downtown to wander the streets, so I suppose one of them could have stolen it not knowing the value, just wanting to sell it for money.

You got the ticket writing cops right. I wonder if they got any of the clown outfits this bike riders wear?
