Russell Stover Agrees To $585K Settlement
Associated Press - Thu 02:53 PM 06/21/2012
Russell Stover Candies has agreed to pay $585,000 to settle alleged violations of the federal Clean Water Act at its facility in the east-central Kansas town of Iola.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency announced the civil penalty in a news release Thursday.
The EPA conducted an audit in June 2008 and found that the Kansas City, Mo.-based candy maker was discharging acidic
wastewater to a government-owned sewage treatment plant. The EPA issued a compliance order the following summer calling for Russell Stover to stop the discharges.
EPA Regional Administrator Karl Brooks says Russell Stover had been discharging acidic wastewater for years, causing deterioration of sewer lines and manholes in Iola.
The consent decree requires court approval. The company didn't immediately comment.

SO $585k is channelled to the EPA and We The CandyEaters are stuck with the bill. This sounds so muck like a corporate tax. While I agree corporations need to be responsible, fines like this MUST be passed onto consumers or the company would eventually go broke. Same with corporate taxes... what a lie. ALL business expense is passed onto consumers.

I'm sure curious what ol' nimble mick sees at Abilene..........and an idea for BobB....IF you don't buy their product, you wouldn't necessarily be paying their fines, would you? Or is this too easy an answer to grasp?

Yeah, good idea... every time the EPA (which is directed by a non-elected dictator) goes after a company, let's just all quit doing business with them. Velcommen to 1930's Germany comrades. Private business ownership is about to come to an end.

"Velkommen" has actually always been Norwegian. And I really doubt that the USA will ever be as bad as Germany was in the 30's. If it ever is, we'll have more to worry about than what the EPA has going on.

Bob,I think it means that other candy companies that follow the rules have a cost advantage now, can compete with Russell Stover. It's an over-simplified example, but the incentive is there to do what's right. Otherwise, without fines, companies could do what they want as far as pollution, safety, etc.

idoh82w84you do you live in a hole? everyday that goes by we loose more and more of our rights and freedom. we are heading to the same spot germany was in the 30's. If its not bad enought you cannot use a dressing room, walk into a store or down the street without being on someone's camera set up by different entities now they want drone's to fly around to spy on us. Sorry if we wait to long we will have a dictator in office who could be spanish.
