Fireworks Sales Begin In Salina
Hannah Furbeck - Wed 09:48 AM 06/27/2012
They can only be discharged in Salina on July 3rd and July 4th, in the county June 27th through July 5th
Consumer fireworks are a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays. But they must be used carefully. According to the National Fire Protection Association, each year nearly 10,000 people are treated at hospital emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries.
Saline County Emergency Management and the Salina Fire Department urges citizens to be fireworks smart, before, during and after their personal fireworks displays.
Before: Choose an open area away from spectators, homes and buildings and dry vegetation. Use a garden hose to wet down the area before firing.
During: As each device burns out, soak it using a hose, or a bucket of water.
After: Place all used items in a covered, fireproof container and leave it outside and away from homes and buildings.
Obey all laws:
Please obey the local city and county ordinances regarding the sale and use of fireworks.
Within the city limits of Salina, City Ordinance Sec.14-57.8 allows you to discharge fireworks on July 3rd and July 4th between 8am and 11pm. Fireworks may be discharged on personal property only. Fireworks may not be discharged within 100 feet of any hospital, infirmary, nursing home, or assisted living facility.
In Saline County fireworks can be sold between June 27th and July 5th. Fireworks can be discharged on personal property only in the County between June 27th and July 5th between the hours of 8am and Midnight.
You can contact the following agencies to obtain information regarding the ordinances pertaining to the purchase and use of fireworks in your area:

Once I figure out which fireworks stand a specific person works at, I would advise all to NOT purchase fireworks from that location.

Hard for me to understand why fire works can be set off anywhere as dry as it is.I'll so worry about my house catching fire.

I love fireworks but as hot and dry as it is there are going to be problems and with the wind blowing major problems because there are to many stupid people who do not realize what can happen. Where are all the city and county emergency people that need to get off their butts and look at the possible problems. we have had less dry years with lower temps and they did something but this year just ignoring the whole situation.

And as the fireworks sales begin, so too do the fires set by them. Seriously, as dry as it is, and as windy as it is, there needs to be a ban. I predict after this year, there will once again be a fireworks ban.

I rarely comment here anymore but does anyone besides me think they should ban fire works again?Seems the young ones aren't taught to be careful with them anymore.Just my opinion, and they are set off long before and after the time limits.

Banning fireworks is definitely needed as dry as it is- but if people used their heads they wouldn't consider it - same way people throw cigarette butts out of car windows-really----I watch them do it all the time----come on people use common sense---why should it have to be "banned" by the city or anyone else - think.

I'm all for a ban on fireworks this year. Look at our neighbors in Colorado...one spark and we could be in the same situation. Normally I love them, but this year I think it's a bad idea.

So, do you think that the city should refund all the money the stands had to put forth on getting their permits if they put a ban on? You know that each stand forks up about $5000 for their permit and has to maintain a safe sale environment? If you think that people are going to be stupid with the fireworks (which don't say you weren't all were stupid back then with fireworks), then get more educational material out there for people and for the the stands. Make sure your gutters are clean... Have a bucket of water near by while lighting fireworks... Follow safety instructions on the fireworks..

Shoot, you only have two days to shoot off here in Salina.. Let people celebrate on their own time.. If the city puts the burn permit on, they better ban Sky Fire... Those flames and sparks can get everywhere! You have more house fires, DUI's, etc. than what you have with fireworks. I find it funny that KSAL always reports on how many "injuries" are caused by fireworks... Why don't we go through a run down on injuries cause by sports, drinking, etc.? Be safe.. Be educated.. Simple as that..

twister a bucket of water in these dry windy conditions would be like trying to pee on it to put it out. This business is just like anyother business and loses are possible due to things that come up. If one person is killed because some dummie goes out into wheat stuble to shoot off his fireworks and starts a big fire do you think this is right. Can these firework stands on every corner want to take on the liability if houses are destroyed? Let's get real here not everyone is careful while most people are, there are the stupid ones we read about everyday in the paper.

Then again, ban Sky Fire from being done and all public firework shows. If you all are that concerned about it, ban anything that deals with fire. Pretty sure I hear more fires getting started by stupid cigarettes, so better ban those things as well during a burn ban. Shoot, you can get killed by lots of things out there, can't you? Better put prohibition back into effect.. Shoot! That electricity stuff causes lots of electrical fires too... Point being, you are thinking every single person is immature with fireworks.. Which isn't the case. You ban it, people are still going to shoot them off.. be sneaky.. and make even more of a hazard.. Don't ban it, less sneaky, less likely to be a hazard.

what twisted thinking of twister9962. Prevention is the main thing. the fireworks stands just opened and a fire has occurred without a ban so your thinking on that is out in left field. why do you not list your phone number and the nest fire you can be called to help put it out and see what it is like. Firefighters do not like endangering themselves because people cannot use fireworks properly. Everyone that is concerned is not against fireworks if the conditions were ok for them to be used. but the conditions are not and there should be a ban put on them.

Every year at Sky Fire you see people lighting fireworks by there vehicles and such. These will be the dumbasses like the one on the side of the road who shot a firework into a field.
