Fireworks Start Fire In Rural Saline County
KSAL Staff - Thu 10:42 AM 06/28/2012
Fireworks start a fire in rural Saline County late Wednesday night.
Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says that rural firefighters were called at around 10:45 in the evening to the report of a fire in a field in the area of Magnolia and Holmes Road.
According to the sheriff, the fire was in a stubble field in 2500 block of South Holmes Road. It was started by someone illegally discharging fireworks from the road.
Firefighters were able to get the fire out quickly before it caused any damage.
Kochanowski says that deputies are going to be vigorously enforcing fireworks violations, and will have a zero-tolerance policy.
In Saline County, fireworks are currently on sale, and can be discharged, through July 5th. They can only be discharged on private property, with the property-owners permission, between the hours of 8 AM and midnight.
In the city of Salina, fireworks are on sale through July 4th. They can only be discharged on July 3rd and July 4th between 8 AM and 11 PM. Fireworks may be discharged on personal property only. Fireworks may not be discharged within 100 feet of any hospital, infirmary, nursing home, or assisted living facility.

Come on now, you are a dip stick probably someone who would do something like this. There needs to be an immediate ban on all burning and on fireworks before something tragic happens. The BS the sheriff is putting out is just that he does not have enought man power to enforce anything especially when patrol cars are parked on the roads where you find them day in and day out writing tickets.

Does anyone else feel like the only reason saline county has not enacted the burn ban is because they don't want to lose out on the revenue from the fireworks? My sugestion is if you buy fireworks, discharge them the same day cause I would bet that the burn ban will be enacted on july 4th.

They are playing with something that could cause a disaster. How much money would it cost them to fight a major fire and the follow up lawsuits? Does not make sense but we evidently have the wrong people in these positions.

Iamgonnagetu, you are correct, this could become a VERY serious situation!! I hope they get that ban in place soon, otherwise there will be a lot of burned up property in town and in the County. I love fireworks, I enjoy them very much, but not at the risk of homes, safety, injuries etc...As hot and dry as it is and has been, there is nothing but major trouble looming!!

Did any of you read the paper yesterday? It is very evident the commissioners and others are protecting 11 firework stands. The excuses they use for not placing a ban are totally without merit and tarnish the reputations of those making them. If there were no firework stands involved there would be a burning ban in place. If they do not institute one they will shortly after the stands close down but by then it may be to late. 2 fires already in less than one day after sales began should send a clear message. But those that should institute the ban have to much conflict of interest with the politician who owns one stand and the Ambuc's who own another that they are willing to jepordise the property of the rest of the taxpayers in Saline County and the City of Salina.

A burn ban wont prevent fires. People will flock to other counties to buy fireworks and shoot them here illegally. Talk about some individuals having power over the powers that be Ottawa County has a burn ban but still is allowing sale of fireworks. Many of the Saline County Stands are owned by a certain fellow from up there. Where do you think those fireworks sold in Ottawa County are being taken to be shot off?

well light if they are going to bring them in then it is up to the police and sheriff to nail them. All the sheriff has been saying is they are going to enforce illegal use of fireworks. Heck he does not have the manpower to do what he says if he did we would have less crime in the county.
