Area Communities Banning Fireworks
KSAL Staff - Sat 09:05 AM 06/30/2012
The hot, dry, conditions are prompting numerous area communities to ban fireworks.
Joining the list Friday were Lincoln, Russell, and Hays. They join over a dozen other area communities that have deemed the discharge of fireworks to be too dangerous because of the dry conditions.
In Salina, and Saline County, the sale and discharge of fireworks have not been banned.
In Saline County, fireworks are currently on sale, and can be discharged, through July 5th. They can only be discharged on private property, with the property-owners permission, between the hours of 8 AM and midnight.
In the city of Salina, fireworks are on sale through July 4th. They can only be discharged in the city on July 3rd and July 4th between 8 AM and 11 PM. Fireworks may be discharged on personal property only.
Local law enforcement is going to be vigorously enforcing fireworks violations, and will have a zero-tolerance policy.
Area fireworks bans:
* City of Ellsworth
* Unincorporated Ellsworth County
* City of Lincoln
* Unincorporated Lincoln County
* Beverly
* Barnard
* Sylvan Grove
* City of Russell
* Unincorporated Russell County
* Lucas
* Luray
* Dorrance
* Bunker Hill
* Paradise
* City of Hays
* Unincorporated Ellis County

Im getting damn tired this bs and crap... Salina and Saline Couty officals are not thinking straight. All they are worried about is (OMG!!) we can not mess up our traditional sky fire that would make us look bad. Oh last year the city looked so awesome seeing all those pretty and beautiful colors in the sky.. I bet the officals already have the trailer loads of fireworks sitting at there houses. They spent so much money on themselves them don't want to ban anything because then they wasted money. I don't give a damn. If our entire town get burned up somebody needs to loose there job.. I hope Kathleen Sabilous or Sam Brown will do the firing and wipe out all the officals making the decisions..

The ban will take effect on Tuesday between 3:00 and 4:00, then the ticket writing can begin. Would not be surprised to find out the SPD is preemptively coordinating a saturation patrol running from 4:00 on Tuesday through noon or so on Thursday. That's my guess. This would allow the city to get as much "bang" for their buck, pardon the pun. Collect tax on the sales of fireworks, then collect the fines for the illegal discharge of those fireworks. It's a win / win for the city.

First thing that needs to occur is Joe Koch needs to resign his position or be terminated. The more I read of his comments and position on this the more I realize he definately is the wrong person for the job. The people who comment about doing nothing need to grow up and realize all the dangers of fireworks not just fire. Then again these are the same people who over spend on buying fireworks and then cannot pay their bills.

Now is not the time to bicker back and forth. Common sense should tell everyone not to discharge fireworks. The city, county, etc. shouldn't have to BAN it - use your heads. For the city to ban - way to late after purchases is assinine---no need for tickets - no need for this crap------people, city officials should just use their heads. The 4th is there for a reason----Independence Day---not a time for Stupidity/tickets/whatever. The city of Salina has a reputation for being money grubbing for stupid reasons/don't give them the opportunity to turn this holiday into another one of those. Use your heads/be safe/a and remember the reason for the holiday.

drpepper sounds like either you are joe or are friends. In your eyes he may be great in the rest of our eyes he should be looking at the interests of us taxpayers and land owners who know how dry it is. Fire is a big thing for many of us and yes there are responsible people but there are also responsible people that may be drinking or taking drugs and do things they might not ordiary do. I have said this before I like fireworks but when the conditions are like this they should not be selling them at all so anyone has them in their possesson. There are to many of us out here that could lost everything because of one person or a group out to have fun. Even the outlawed fireworks are showing up which is even a bigger concern. I like many feel if those we have in charge wish to ignor the dangers for 11 business's there is something wrong. I also have read Koch's comments an I am embrassed he is in the position he has.

After what I heard on the scanner last night, Salina/Saline county BETTER be doing the same thing!!! I tried to give the benefit of the doubt but, last night, ALL night, our EMS/FIRE/POLICE were all over town and in the County putting out fires and treating injuries!! Some were very bad!!! It's obvious we cannot trust people to use common sense and police themselves. Get a ban in place soon before more damage and destruction to innocent people occur!! I for one will be filing a lawsuit against the Salina/Saline lawmakers if I should sustain any damage to myself or my property. The weather conditions are not "firework friendly" right now, it's too dry/hot/windy.

Also, why should the insurance companies be paying out huge losses for stupidity by people, the cost of these losses paid out are passed down to the consumers. If my house catches on fire because of fireworks, shall I count on you, and any others that are not in favor of the ban, to replace my pictures of family members, my things that I worked so hard for, stuff I have that were family heirloom items that can NEVER be replaced?? Yes, it is the 4th of July, although not for a few days yet, Noone is supposed to shooting off fireworks yet, as I said, we cannot trust people to use common sense, very sad indeed there are so many people that insist on ruining the fun for so many others that are playing by the rules!! But, that's the way it usually works in many situations, there are ALWAYS SOME that do not abide by the laws and thus manage to destroy what others are looking forward to.

Counting down to the big ban! Still figuring on late Tuesday afternoon. Monday at the earliest. The city needs to see as much tax revenue from fireworks sales as possible yet get the ban in place early enough to see even more revenue from the issue of tickets. If the ban were to go into affect before Monday we could go elsewhere to purchase and discharge fireworks thus costing the city of Salina vast amounts of revenue. This is all about money, not safety.

It's tax revenue. Might not be that much, but it's a good start. Can't write tickets if no fireworks are sold. So, gotta sell as many fireworks as possible for as long as possible. Then ban them. Then start writing tickets. They are calculating exactly when to begin the ban in order to maximize the cash potential. Not too hard to figure out.

Us "old people" DID in fact raise our children to be responsible, it's the ones with your attitude that make the good ones look bad. As for Joe, there's no question he is feeling pressure right now, does he do the responsible, safe thing, or, keep generating that revenue for the city, A bit of advice Joe, always error on the side of caution by doing what would be in EVERYONE'S best interest to keep people and property safe!! I would like to point out, 4th of July can be celebrated many ways other than shooting off fireworks, placing innocent people and their property in harms way. When the framers signed our Declaration of Independence, I'm pretty sure they were not thinking, "Boy, I sure hope people go out and spend oodles of money on fireworks to shoot up in the air every year for 236 years". As I said, if people could be trusted to use common sense, this would not be a problem, but, a very large number of people over the last few days have proven they cannot be left to their own devices, they need to be told right/wrong. To the idiots that cannot seem to follow the law on this, I certainly hope the courts will be handing down some very expensive fines to teach these people a lesson.

Why not let people light fireworks in the city where there is faster access to water (JUST IN CASE) vs banning and forcing them all out in the county setting off wild fires that can burn acres in a matter of minutes. I really don't care about bargains/markups - that's irrelevant to this conversation... let alone this article. That's not what this is about. You basically admitted you don't buy fireworks because of the markup... you certainly wouldn't be calling yourself stupid would you? So regardless... with your line of thinking... is you want them banned 100% every year... because all of the stand operators light their left overs out in the country. That's not going to happen. And I did state in my prior comment that people would go light them in the country. Who says these people live in Salina anyways.. or even Saline county for that matter. You're just a grouch that wants to take people's fireworks away... and you don't care because it doesn't affect you because you don't buy them anyway... Boohoo! Usually the people that are dangerous with fireworks are the one's who don't respect the law... which will probably be the one's to "cause problems" with or without a ban
