Salina Celebrates Independence Day

Playday in the Park featured free hot dogs, chips, watermelon, ice cream, popsicles and soft drinks
Fun and games began Independence Day in Salina Wednesday, and a concert and spectacular fireworks display ended it.
A nice crowd arrived early to beat the heat of the day to enjoy a “Freedom Safari” at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure to begin the day. Events included keeper encounters, the giraffe feeding station was open, and zoo teens were selling sno-cones.
A shady spot was the place to be later in the day as the City of Salina Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the annual Playday in the Park. A large crowd enjoyed a hot, sunny, windy afternoon of old-fashioned games for the kids. It included free hot dogs, chips, watermelon, ice cream, popsicles and soft drinks.
The annual Skyfire Fireworks spectacular ended the day at the East Crawford Recreation Area. A free concert featuring the Soul Preachers preceded the fireworks.
The fireworks display this year was again synchronized to a very special patriotic music montage that was broadcast on News Radio 1150 KSAL.

KSAL.....How about reporting on all the fires and the damage they are causing in the county and the city. Its after the posted hours to be using fireworks but they are going off everywhere. Where is the police and sheriff presence like they said they would have?

Just wait ksal is holding back.. Tomorrow or friday ksal will combine 3rd and 4th into one article after they get the total number citations, tickets and dui's and total incidents...

For crying out loud....Getalife.....live and let live. Loosen up and enjoy the holiday. If everyone would use the brain God gave them all will be ok. Its all about celebrating our country. Live a little and don't get so uptight!

ksgal2012: There are many ways to enjoy the 4th without setting fires all over town, shooting the fireworks till 3am and keeping people awake, especially the ones that have to get up early for work, I totally enjoyed the holiday without doing things that affected my neighbors. God bless our Firemen, last night they sure were on the move from about 10pm till well after midnight putting out fires caused by stupid people!! And, you said it all, not EVERYONE will use the brain God gave them, so it's ok to make the people around them miserable?? There is just no way I see possible this firework ordinance stays in effect.

What a civics lesson. One group wants independence and to keep government out of our lives, and the other wants dependence on government and welcomes any attempt at nanny state control. Happy Independence Day to the growing few who stand up and fight to keep government out of our lives.

So a few fires got started, not that big of a deal. Just watch what you are doing and there will not be a problem, I heard several sirens last night and am unsure of the damage done. However it was not like what many people have said it was going to be.

salinamomma where is your head? Your the person who should lose their home to fire from fireworks or lose a child in a fireworks related accident. One can celebrate independence day without fireworks. People no longer are responsible in handling them. You also have the element that bring in fireworks that are illegal in Kansas from missouri or oklahoma and set them off. Your some kind of momma.

blita121 you are another one that needs to have a lose due to a fire started by fireworks. If it was not for the volenteer firefighters and the regular fire fighters there would not be much left of salina or saline county and probably many deaths. Maybe you should volenteer to help the fire fighters to see first hand what you call a few fires and get a first hand look at it. Its people like you with your attitude that cause these problems.

To THEENFORCER, PLEASE........It people like you that think that would ban everything dangerous. I know that a few fires were caused, but it also is reported that there was no major damage. As for me, it is the 4th of July, a time to celebrate our freedom, even dipdongs like you should be able to appreciate that. I want my kids to grow up celebrating the 4th with fireworks, just like I did.

I live in the country, I do burn pasture every year. Maybe you should relax just a little bit, people freak out way to much over current events(Colorado) being one and think that this would effect us the same way. Like I said lets ban smoking as well then because it kills and it also started a few of these fires.

Billybob what freedoms do you have left to celebrate? Everywhere you go your on camera. Everything you do on the computer is scrutinize. You cannot even drive your car without having to buckle up. The list goes on so you have fun but not my or my families expense or antithetical innocent family.

Biltz that is fine that you burn but like anything else there are other guys that burn and cause fires. What you need to look at is the number of fire runs prior to fireworks being sold and the number after. That tells the story.
