Firefighters Contain Large Grass Fire
Matt Horn / KSN News - Fri 02:41 PM 07/06/2012
Saline County rural firefighters from three districts worked together to contain a large grass fire west of Salina Friday afternoon.
Crews from Rural Fire Districts 6, 2, and 1 all responded to the fire in the area of Schilling and Lightville Road.
Initially the fire threatened a house, but firefighters were able to keep it away. Livestock in the path of the fire were also threatened. The livestock was herded together, and kept safe.
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained to grassy areas.
A firefighter was taken to Salina Regional Health Center after experiencing a heat related injury while helping fight the fire.
The Saline County Sheriff's Office says that the fire was started by the illegal discharge of fireworks.

Imagine that!! Someone illegally discharging their fireworks!!! And wonder of all wonders, yet another fire!! Being we cannot control peoples stupidity, how bout protecting the innocent ones from them. I hope whoever was shooting these fireworks gets a nice hefty bill from Saline County sheriff and the rural fire dept. Maybe if the idiots were to have to pay for the problems and damage they are causing, they will think twice before setting them off!!

The radio said that a firefighter was overcome by heat and taken to the hospital for evaluation. Whoever it is, I hope it isn't too bad because I have had heat exhaustion in the past and the effects can last a long time.

Enough is enough time to call the county commissioners and get a ban on fireworks in the county. Then the city needs to follow as well.

How do we know it was from fireworks? I was driving down the street and saw a lady throw a lit cigarette out her window! Everyone needs to be responsible with this dry weather so our firefighters and officers are safe.

Iamgonnagetu...read the County Resolution. It permits use of fireworks ONLY during those times. The rest of the time they are not allowed. The CR allows the use of fireworks during a said time, and states when they are not, such as now.

Smokey there was no offical burn ban declared in Saline County or anywhere in the Salina City Limits. The dates before the 3rd and after the 4th have always just been a general rule when fireworks can not be shot. No where does it say there was ban for our area.. Get your facts straight before you start talking...
