Salina Man To Appear In Court For Animal Care
Annika Patrick - Mon 12:05 PM 07/23/2012
A cat was found dead inside a car.
Donald Reeves, 57 of 2145 Tulane, was taking items out to his vehicle when he started to feel dizzy. According to the Salina Police Department, Reeves was taken to the hospital on Saturday, July 21 at 10 p.m.
The next evening, the police returned to Reeves' home to find a cat in a pet carrier inside the vehicle. The cat was deceased.
Reeves was contacted at the hospital and issued a notice to appear in court for animal care requirements.

I must be missing something here!!! The man was taken to the hospital, obviously for a medical issue (Unless on friday nite after 10pm they are serving alcohol now), And SPD issued him a citation, AT THE HOSPITAL, because his cat died!!?? Ok, well I guess somebody dropped the ball on the poor cat, and I'm really sorry the cat died such a horrible death, but REALLY, the man may have some health issues he's dealing with and SPD stacks this onto him too!!! WOW, Chief Hill, would love you to explain this to us. I'm sure this man did not intend to leave his cat to die in a pet carrier in the car. And, while they obviously have so much time to write ridiculous tickets to people, perhaps they could look into solving some of the recent crimes that are taking over our community!!!

Sorry I believe this Guy is at fault. He had lots of opportunity to let someone know about the cat. Suppose he put a kid in the car closed the door became sick and went to the hospital and the kid dies now we have a real tragedy. If it were up to me I put this Guy in his car and forget about him not until he died but long enought to see what it is like in that hot car.

An "Overzealous prosecution" refers to someone instituting legal proceedings against a defendant for criminal behavior with the intention to support an excessive enthusiasm for some cause, rather than with any genuine basics for the suit. Need I say more?

I think we need to ask ourselves WHO took him to the hospital, WHERE was he when they picked him up and WHY didn't they notice a cat carrier in the car.

Most certainly there is responsibility on the guy!! If he was able to speak, he should have told someone to get the cat. I think Viper raises valid points, WHO/WHERE/WHY, If the man was not coherent, medicated, in medical testing etc... I doubt he was remembering his cat in the car. Iamgonnagetu, I think about the many times that has been on the news, parents leave the kids in the cars and they die. THAT is sickening to me, especially when they are not prosecuted. I suspect had a child of been in the car, that would have been noticed. I have never understood HOW a person can forget there's a child in the car!! If he was unable to tell anyone about the carrier until it was too late, that is terrible, especially since there were obviously people around, why did they not check on the car/cat/carrier??

Yep Granny I must be missing something here also. If the guy was by his car, and it was there he was placed onto a ambulance cart, you would think someone would have noticed the cat in the car if the doors were open or not. The guy may have been unable to speak or whatever. Very sad the cat died a horrible death, but dam talk about adding insult to injury. Perhaps there is some little detail missing from this story. I think when the nice officer asked me to sign the promise to appear I would have just tore the dam ticket up. Give me a break. Way to go SPD!

Very stupid read your reports from salinapost.com about the same man. One said he wax putting things in the car the other say he is taking things out. I would gwt a good attorney and get some cash out of Salina for irresponsible officers that couldn't ask a older ill man that has medical conditions, apperantly he most been sick enought to be at the hospital over night. Waaaaaooohhhhh $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ court is trying to make cash....

This is a horrible way for a cat to die. Somebody definitely needs to be held accountable.

It's a horrible way for anyone, human or animal to die!!! I still have to question why noone noticed the pet carrier in the backseat, and who was there to get him to the hospital. What a world we live in when parents can leave their children to die in their cars, numerous times, and walk away unscathed--But a guy being taken to the hospital for health reasons leaves a cat in the car and he's issued a citation!!! Amazing!!
