Woman Killed In Motorcycle Crash Near Salina

Crash happened at the I-70 / I-135 Junction
A Herington woman is killed in a motorcycle crash near Salina Saturday afternoon.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 58-year-old Leah Webb of Herington was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle, exiting from Interstate 135 onto eastbound Interstate 70. She struck the front right corner of an SUV that was eastbound on I-70 exiting onto northbound I-135.
Webb was killed in the crash. Troopers say that she was not wearing a helmet.
No one in the SUV was hurt.
The crash happened at 2:50 Saturday afternoon at the I-70 / I-135 junction west of Salina.

Sorry to hear of any traffic death, but really? SUV exited off I-70 to go north on I-35 is struck by a motorcycle leaving I-35 to east bound I-70? How could that have happened with the clover leaf design out at I-70 and I-35? The SUV would have had to of missed their exit for these two vehicles to collide...

This is a horrible design!! That cloverleaf for I-35 and I70 does not allow enough room or time for people getting on and off of the respective interstate to make their exits/entrances!! There have been many times when I have traveled this route I have seen some near misses with people. This was a VERY tragic accident, I'm sorry for the loss of the woman and my condolences go to her family. I would be curious to know how anyone would blame the person driving the SUV if the motorcycle struck THEM on the front right corner? This is an accident, if there was any blame to be passed I would have to say the blame should go to the people that designed this horrible on and off ramps on the north side of 70/35!!

As to the helmet, I'm not sure which answer would be right or wrong. I do not ride a motorcycle, I have friends that do/have for years. I have heard both sides of this argument as to if a helmet is better or worse. The young man that recently died on old 40 and state I was told WAS wearing a helmet. I suspect the benefit of a helmet would increase your odds, but I'm sure it would depend on the type of accident you are in.

The state and government needs to stay out of people's lives concerning helmets and seat belts. If people want to use them or not its up to them. Evidently the state or highway patrol makes money from the feds or they would not be reporting whether people are or are not using these things. Frankly this is America and its none of their damn business.

@ getu: agreed, as long as the taxpayers aren't forced to foot the medical bills for the former-bikers-turned-vegetables because of severe head trauma. Same with seat belts, if you don't want to buckle up, don't expect state or federal medical assistance. As for the cloverleaf, it was designed back when the speed limit was 55mph. The acceleration/deceleration lanes are completely inadequate for merging at close to 80mph. Contact KDOT and ask them to redo the cloverleaf, reduce the speed limit around there, or both. http://kdotapp2.ksdot.org/WelcomeContact/contact.aspx

risigr, that is a good point, but, in this theory any government medical assistance should also be withheld for people that are overweight due to eating too much, breathing problems for smokers and former smokers, health issues to due alcohol consumption etc... anyone choosing to be irresponsible should not be eligible for government medical benefits? I'm not sure what the answer here is, I know I feel better wearing a seatbelt, not because the government tells me to, because I think my odds are better with it should I be in an accident. I will contact KDOT about this, that's a good idea, this area is very dangerous and I'm surprised we have not heard of more fatalities here. As far as I'm concerned, this is 1 too many!!

As for the design of the cloverleaf, that area of land is all the designer was given to work with to design 4 exit ramps and 4 entrance ramps to the two interstates. The designer of this interchange then went and got a licence to drive a semi-truck so he could be sure a large truck would be able to safely use the clover leaf.

Wrong when that was built any among of land was available. I agree speed limits have increased and it needs to be redesigned.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of life but I look at the laws on the motorcycle like this..... If there is a STATE LAW that says I have to wear my seatbelt while in a car.... Then there should be no excuse why someone on a damn motorcycle doesn't have to wear a helmet!!!! I have rode motorcycles in the past but don't anymore. I never rode with out a helmet!!!!

You all are reading the location wrong. The article states nothing about I-35. It states I-135 which is a different highway, and there is no cloverleaf there.
