As many as 17 school break-ins have occurred over the summer
The FBI has joined the hunt in northwestern Kansas and southwestern Nebraska for burglars who have been targeting schools and making off with expensive electronics.
As many as 17 such break-ins have occurred over the summer.
The latest and largest took place in the early morning hours of Aug. 9 in Phillipsburg, Kan. Burglars broke into the high school and stole about 150 iPads, 160 iPad chargers and 90 cases for the tablets.
Phillips County Sheriff Paul Wisinger says the loss is estimated at $75,000.
In Cambridge, Neb., superintendent Robert Gregory puts the damage and loss from a July 31 break-in at the high school at $50,000. The haul included iPads, digital cameras and five flat-screen TVs.

I say our schools are at fault for not having better surveillance systems inside our schools. I believe it would be in every schools best interest to upgrade there security system. Once a incident occurs and the system detects it the building goes into lock down.

The city could start with selling the uneeded art work and grant the money to the schools.

How is it the school's fault that people feel the need to steal from them??? If a house doesn't have a security system does that make it okay for someone to break in? There are jobs being cut, hours being cut, and programs being cut where's the money come from for these systems? I agree that it would be good, but I think blaming the school is ridiculous.

Most schools have surveillance cameras in there hallways. They just really need to make sure areas where electonics are stored are better secured. Its never okay break in places. But it is also smart not to make it easy for them to steal.

300,000 educational jobs lost this year so far. surveillance cameras are the last things on administrations minds. the kids are top priority. instead of all this high tech bull s--t, whats wrong with using pencil and paper. it's a helluva lot cheaper. i guess if you don't know how to turn on a computer, you don't stand a chance. you'd think rreading and writing would be the first things to learn. wonder how many 5 or 6 year olds know the alphabet

It's funny to read everyone's take on this. Have any of you looked into the tremendous amount spent on non-teaching positions and assistants to these positions in Salina alone? Easy over 2 million a year being spent. Everyone always blames teacher salaries but that is not the case. I challenge you to check the long list of people employed in the Salina school district alone and if many of these people would be cut there would be a surplus of funds available.

Iamgonnagetu, You are right!! For instance, that huge new building being built out on south broadway for the school system, offices and such!! WHY??!! In our community there are MANY empty buildings that could be useful to the school system if they needed more/bigger whatever, offices!! Why are we spending so damn much on this building when we cannot support the teachers and schools, they cut many of the kids programs and yet found the millions of dollars it takes to build this building!!
