State transportation officials are crossing the state to discuss possible solutions to an expected reduction in funding for highway projects.

Kansas Department of Transportation officials visited with local government and community leaders in Salina, Hays, Dodge City and Hutchinson last week. Similar meetings are planned in Olathe, Topeka, Chanute and Wichita before Oct. 11.

The officials are discussing how to maintain funding in the face of declining revenue from the federal government and the state's motor fuel tax.

The Hutchinson News reports the top three solutions chosen at last week's meetings included increasing the motor fuels tax; levying a tax on alternative fuels and imposing an extra annual registration fee on cars that run on alternative fuels or electricity.

They could start with the Kansas Organization of State Employees (UNION), just get rid of them and hire non-union folks. I would lean against a shovel in a ditch for 1/2 of what some of those folks make.

Ever notice just how many KDOT workers are standing around, 2 working, 6 watching!! RIF them (reduction in force). If you consider the pay, benefits and retirement cost of one worker, why not contract (1099) for projects!! Dang you can tell I am an educated, concerned voter!!!!

I actually think KOSE plays a good useful role for state employees...and I am not eligible to become a member of KOSE, not do I belong to any union. Folks, our state employees are often criticized, but try doing without them and see what will happen to the voices of criticism. We ought to thank these employees. They make our life better and to often do not get much appreciation. Thank you state employees and thank you to the members of KOSE.

I'm not sure if any of you have ever worked for the state government, but it's not the Union's fault. Here's the really sad explanation I got when I got a job during college and almost got fired for "working too fast". The government gives different branches/departments/etc money, now if at the end of the year the bank account doesn't equal zero, the state reduces funding the following year. Now, that seems obvious right, after all they didn't need the money! However, the following year something occurs, and funding has already been cut so essentially there isn't enough money to finish projects. Then it's nearly impossible to get funding back. Now, this isn't to say that things aren't being done wrong. I'm merely saying before we go bashing the employees perhaps we should look up the ladder before we pass judgement.

I for one am tired of having tax added to gas or my auto registration fees that just went up for a 45 million dollar computer system that still is not working. It was mentioned about people standing around watching others doing the work and guess what those standing around earn twice as much as those actually doing the job. Kept needs to clean up their act and probably will find millions in extra money.

Kdot has mismanaged its funds now they want me to pay more for a gallon of gas or to register my car? I say fire everyone working for kdot from the head guy on down and hire people who will not mismanage the funds they are given.
