A strange odor in a North Salina neighborhood prompts a response by the Salina Fire Department Hazardous Material Team.
According to the department, Tuesday evening at about 7 crews responded to 1227 N. 7th street for a strange odor /
possible gas leak in the area call. Crews were unable to find the source of the leak / odor.
Several residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure and crews from Kansas Gas Services responded to the location and worked throughout the night however, they were also unable to find the source.
Wednesday morning crews again responded to the same area, prompted by reports of residents in the area complaining headaches. The fire department haz-mat team conducted a house by house search to find the source, the search and monitoring resulted in finding a 55 gallon drum of an unknown substance in a shed.
The haz-mat tteam is packaging the 55 gallon drum in a separate over-pack drum to isolate the container. A KDHE response team has been requested to retrieve the container for further analysis.
