A school resource officer reported the 14-year-old boy entered the principal's office around lunchtime and pulled out a pocket knife. Police say the boy didn't threaten the principal but refused to drop the knife.

Police in a Kansas City suburb say officers had to use a stun gun to get a high school student to drop a knife. The incident occurred Thursday at Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park.

According to police, a school resource officer reported the 14-year-old boy entered the principal's office around lunchtime and pulled out a pocket knife. Police say the boy didn't threaten the principal but refused to drop the knife.

The resource officer called Overland Park police, who say one of their officers deployed a stun gun on the boy to keep him from hurting himself or anyone else. The boy was taken to a hospital to be checked.

Shawnee Mission district officials said the school staff had followed emergency plans throughout the incident.

He was a 14 year old kid, holding a knife. Although he did not threaten anyone with it, you taser him??? You guys are dumbasses... I am sure with a little more calm, and collective talking, you could have gotten this kid to put it down. I hope the parents sue the hell out of you. If it was my kid you tasered, all hell would break loose....

Somebody with a brandished knife refusing to put the knife away is a threat; add to the fact, school policy's are zero tolerance about that sort of stuff, it doesn't surprise me the kid got dropped. Puff your chest all you want, but the fact is a person with a knife would not drop it when a police officer came in. It's a tense situation, and the officer chose a route that was the safest option. Unfortunate, yes, but the only one in the wrong in this situation was the 14 year old.

The boy was holding a weapon in a school. If anyone is a dumbass in this story it's the kid. Stun him first and ask questions later I say. People like "whosyourdaddy" are why some kids think they can get away with anything. Actions have consequences, deal with it.

The article does not mention a taser being used. It was a stun gun. If the article is correct then there is a difference. If I as a law enforcement officer was confronted with someone who would not drop the weapon he was holding, I would not hesitate to use what force necessary, teenager or not. No reason for an officer to get injured because of a punk high school student.

The difference between stun guns and tasers is that stun gun effects are based on pain compliance while taser overrides the object's nervous system and causes physical incapacitation. http://www.ask.com/answers/49381321/what-s-the-difference-between-stun-guns-and-tasers

I agree with GetaGrip and Farmdude. People should respect the authority of law enforcement. Thes guys and ladies put their life on the line daily. They all have families and deserve to be there for them. Society is not what is use to be and it boils down to upbringing. 20 years ago you would never hear someone trash law enforcement and the chief (you know who you are!!) Should kept you locked up!!
