The western Kansas town of Ellis has a new police chief.
The Hays Daily News reports that the Ellis City Council voted 5-1 this week to approve the hiring committee's recommendation to name part-time Ellis police officer Taft Yates as the new police chief. He replaces Randy Taylor, who resigned recently to become chief of police in Clarkdale, Arizona.
Yates' starting salary is about $19 per hour.
The Ellis Police Department has five full-time officers, including the chief, and one part-time officer.
Mayor Dave McDaniel says the town of about 200 residents also recently hired a new fire chief and a new city clerk.
