An overheated air conditioner leads to a brief evacuation of a Salina elementary school Wednesday morning.

According to USD 305, around lunchtime a Westar power failure caused Heusner Elementary to lose power. A motor on an air conditioning unit overheated as a result of the power failure.

As a precaution, students and staff were evacuated.

The Salina Fire Department responded and thoroughly checked the situation. After investigating, the officials determined there was no safety issue.

When power was restored students reentered the building and school resumed as normal by 1:00 p.m.

Thats odd.....when the electricity is out, shouldn't the A/C motor be off as well? And why is the A/C motor even running on a crisp morning anyway?
