Lyons Man Arrested In Shooting Incident

KSAL Staff - Wed 10:53 AM 10/10/2012

If Jason Gleason is convicted on all 14 crimes, he could face more than 300 years behind bars.

If Jason Gleason is convicted on all 14 crimes, he could face more than 300 years behind bars.

A Lyons man is in the Saline County Jail, accused in a Tuesday night incident where shots were fired at a state trooper.

According to Saline County Jail records, 30-year-old Jason Gleason was booked in overnight on numerous charges that could include kidnapping and attempted murder.

Gleason is suspected of robbing a Rice County bank Tuesday. The FBI says a man walked into the First Bank of Chase Tuesday morning, showed a weapon and demanded money. He left in a green sports utility vehicle.

Troopers Tuesday evening spotted the suspect vehicle near Assaria in rural Saline County, and a chase ensued.

The suspect crashed near the intersection of Assaria Road and Gypsum Valley Road in rural Saline County. Gleason fled on foot after exchanging gunfire with a state trooper.

Kyle Smith from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation tells KSAL News that three people were hurt, including the state trooper.

Two of the victims were in the vehicle with the suspect, an adult woman and a child. One was flown from the scene by helicopter. The other was taken to a hospital by ground transportation. Their exact injuries and conditions were still not made public as of late Wednesday morning, but Smith says both were being treated for gunshot injuries.

Smith says that a woman and three children were in the SUV with Gleason.

Trooper Ben Gardner told KSAL News at the scene that the state trooper's injury was the result of shattered glass, and not from being shot. He was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with minor injuries. His name was not being released Wednesday morning.

After being on the run for a couple of hours, Gleason was caught along Hobbs Creek Road about a half-mile south of Gypsum Valley Road.

Kansas State Troopers, KBI Agents, FBI Agents, Saline County Sheriff Deputies, and McPherson County Deputies were all among multiple agencies that responded. The highway patrol also had aircraft searching from the air, including an airplane and a helicopter.

According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, Gleason was released from prison in Hutchinson in June. He had served 8 years for crimes that include aggravated robbery. While in prison he was cited numerous times for violations that include fighting, theft, and contraband.

The only people shot in this incident were innocent women and children and were shot BY THE POLICE. We continue on as if they are heros. Joke.

Actually Liberty there is the possibility the bad guy, while running away, shot these people. (In fact, from the people I have spoken with that is PROBABLY the case) Or, perhaps in the hail of gunfire coming at the trooper.....he shot wildly and hit those people. BUT its the criminal who caused it all. I have an idea....... how about we put your idiot self behind the wheel of a car and shoot at you. Perhaps when the glass is hitting your eyes and face, causing great amounts of your blood to impair your vision, you won't be very accurate. Of course, you will be busy defecating and urinating in your pants. You are a tool of the first order.

Can't blame the cops they are used to writing tickets or parking in lots to talk to each other. I was glad to read that the people living in that area had their weapons out. This is one time they should of shot this guy he is worthless.

Thank you Kansascop. There are some people who just don't get it, and will never get it unless she needs something from the police. 99.99999% of the people do get and do respect and appreciate you for the service you provide to our community.

Iamgonnagetu, it is apparent that you have never actually been in a combat situation or you would not be chest-thumping about shooting another person or being a vigilante. I also want to thank the police officers involved in this pursuit for doing an excellent job apprehending this suspect at great risk to their won personal safety.

Well said Carlos. The officers involved in this dangerous situation did a wonderful job and no doubt saved one or more residents in the area from being taken hostage and possibly hurt by this desperate man's effort to escape capture. Keep up the great work. The community appreciates you.

Hey Carlos I have been in war and I agree with Iamgonna and would not think twice putting someone down that is endangering my life. If you ever were in combat which I highly doubt by your post you would know where I am going with my statement.

victory I see you are on here with your alias conserative but I know you were a draft dodger and afraid to go to war or see combat duty. The residents of the area were ready to put this guy down for good so he did not cost us money to store him in a cell. The cops kill guys in several situations in this town but evidently had others around so they could not justify killing this guy which they should have. This guy did not worry about the kids or woman with him when he opened fire from his wrecked car they meant nothing to him.

First Carlos I saw plenty of combat but it was me or them and by God it was not going to be me. By the way are you here legally?

Oh, really nice @iam. You are stereotyping Carlos because of his name. Pittinger said that was never allowed. Hope he gets it and hope he was serious. Totally bogus. And for a person who claims to have served in the military you sure were not paying attention in class. Carlos Hatchock is one of the most famous Marines and bravest Americans in modern history. Wow. Unbelievable.

In my experience, people who talk tough are the weakest link in the chain, and people who were in combat don't brag about it or advocate violence against others.
