A man who escaped from the Ottawa County Jail and carjacked a vehicle will spend near 20 years in federal prison.

According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom's Office, 22-year-old Eric Jerome James has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison. The sentence will run consecutive to his remaining term in state prison.

James was one of four inmates who escaped from the Ottawa County Jail April 18. The Kansas Attorney General’s Office filed criminal escape charges against the other three.

In his plea, James admitted that he was still on foot shortly after fleeing the jail in Minneapolis when he encountered a victim identified as J.H., who was leaving home for work. James overpowered J.H. by threat and force, demanding he give up control of the vehicle.

The victim fled after suffering serious bodily injury to his face and James drove away alone in J.H.’s vehicle. James was arrested April 20 in Omaha, Nebraska. As part of the plea agreement, the state of Kansas did not charge James for the jail escape.

Now we all know the cops don't do nothing but try to look good on paper. Look lately they botch the removal of a guy in a basement and got one of their own injured when that did not need to happen. Had they got their swat team to do the job this poor unfortunate cop would be ok today. But instead of saying they made a mistake they tried to change the story on what did occur and was media news. That my friends is dead wrong. To say to avoid wasting tax payer money here on this story for an unnecessary trial is plain bull. If the taxpayers had all the monies city and state governments waste we would never have to pay taxes.
