Group seeks to build support for wind tax credit

Staff and Wire Reports - Sun 04:55 AM 10/14/2012

A group that advocates for renewable energy is targeting Kansas' four U.S. representatives who are opposed to renewing a tax credit for wind energy production.

The Climate + Energy Project, a Kansas-based nonprofit group, is trying to gather at least 5,000 signatures urging Reps. Tim Huelskamp, Mike Pompeo, Kevin Yoder and Lynn Jenkins to support extending the tax credit.

A spokeswoman for the Kansas group says the signature drive started after Siemens Wind Power announced that it planned to lay off 256 of its 408 workers at its Hutchinson plant. The company says confusion over the future of the tax credit caused a sharp drop in orders for next year.

No tax credits no wind farms???? Common sense should tell us that something is wrong if wind power can't make a go of it without government subsidies!

I'm aware of that articles. There are some simple flaws to the math used in that article but that's not the point. There was just reason to subsidies the oil industries almost a 100 years ago when they were struggling to get organized but there is no reason to still continue to do so for an industry that is recording record profits. I'm not even in favor of most of the subsidies that farmers receive even though they have a direct impact on our Kansas economy. The federal goverment needs to stop spending money in this manner.

Riverguy, you LIE... Obama and the Democrats talk about huge “subsidies” — as if taxpayers are signing billion-dollar checks to oil and gas companies. But oil companies don’t get subsidies. Rather, like every other business, they’re allowed to take tax deductions for the expenses they incur.

A tax deduction and a government subsidy aren’t the same. When politicians use the terms interchangeably, it misleads many Americans.

Oil-company tax deductions aren’t special favors. They are the standard relief afforded manufacturers, mining companies and other businesses to help recognize the costs of operations. Oil companies can deduct their expenses for things like equipment purchases and rig-technicians’ salaries. The point of these deductions — as for any other industry or individual — is to ensure taxes are only levied on income after expenses.

Oil companies can also deduct expenses related to exploration or development. The idea there is to provide an incentive to take on the often substantial risk of seeking new energy sources. When these efforts succeed, the energy market expands, prices drop and America moves that much closer to energy independence.

Bottom line: Oil and natural gas companies aren’t subsidized — they’re merely benefiting from the same, reasonable cost-of-operation deductions afforded to all kinds of industries.

The real subsidies — and the real scandal — are to be found in “renewable” energy, which has taken in tens of billions in direct government payments over the last few years but has little to show for it.
