Low Test Scores Doom School's Halloween parade
- Sat 05:26 PM 10/27/2012
Officials are studying why students meeting or exceeding standards in reading and math fell slightly in the 2011-12 school year.
Frightening test scores have prompted a Hutchinson elementary school to cancel its annual Halloween parade so pupils can use the time learning.
KWCH reports administrators at McCandless Elementary canceled the event because it is being monitored by the State Department of Education and student test scores were low.
Some parents are upset that children who are getting good grades are being punished because of the performance of others.
Principal Glen Owen says classroom celebrations will go on as scheduled, but the time allotted for the Halloween parade will be
used instead for school work.
A spokesman for the Hutchinson School District says student learning is a bigger priority for the schools than having parade.

Wow its all the kids fault. Those in charge of running the school and the teachers teaching these kids take no responsibility what so ever. Here is a typical problem with our school systems and school boards.

@Iamgonnagetyou Although, I do agree that some of the responsibility lies with the school staff; the parents need to take their share of the blame. I have seen more and more parents not taking an active role in their children's education, preferring too act like it is only the school systems responsibility for teaching and getting the kids to do their homework.

I am a school teacher and I think they shot themselves in the foot on this one. They will lose more than they gain. The school parade doesn't even last that long, but the negative effect will last much longer with these kids. Iamgonnagetyou, I don't know specifically about this school, but when my kids don't get it....I take 90% of the blame.

I agree with you salinalady taking away a Halloween Parade is ridiculous. These are supposed to be educated professionals in charge and they should make better decisions.

Salinaksm why would they take their kids education serious when they cannot teach their kids right from wrong and to respect others.

I hear they have an outstanding high school football team. Their kids are evidently dumb as a post, but the parents down there sure caz grow ball players.

Let them have their parade. I'll bring cookies, protien shakes and vitamin supplements. Doesn't matter how poorly they did on the big test, what matters is will they be ready for ball practice at 4:00? This kind of thing has been brewing decades. It is getting worse every day. You can't stop it.

@Iamgonnagetyou And we get too the root of the problem, for what seems a quickly growing number of parents today, they just don't take any, or little, responsibility; they have come to believe that everything is the responsibility of others. The belief that all education, be it reading, writing, arithmetic, or even manners and responsibility, starts at home is a dying trait nowadays. The biggest bunch of bull for an excuse is usually "We both work full time jobs, and don't have time." To whit I tell them about my parents and how they had time for us kids and how they took an active role in our educations and up-bringing. Such a sad, sad, world we live in today. For you parents that do take an active role in your children's lives, I tip my hat; for those that 'don't have time' grow up and learn time management.

What a Grinch they are, I have to agree with Salina Lady, and having lived a live where I was in charge of others , when they performed poorly it was my fault and when they excelled I gave them credit, this if I was a kid would really tork me, it will have a negative effect. And by the way just because they score well on assesments dosent mean they are smart, Ive had two of mine continually score exemplary on the assesments and not get good scores on the ACT, I think we are conentraiting on the wrong stuff

Dami you can't stop it. Here you are teaching kids that should be in special schools for special education. You complain that kids should be taught what they are capable of learning but you cannot change that either. Its a lose lose situation

Sorry, I'm not claiming I could. I'm claiming it can be stopped.
