Salina Considers LED Lighting For Downtown
Associated Press - Wed 06:47 AM 12/05/2012
Commissioners said this week that they liked the $3.1 million proposal by Johnson Controls to replace 347 outdated lights downtown with LED lights.
Salina city commissioners are considering a $3.1 million proposal to upgrade lighting downtown.
Commissioners said this week that they liked the $3.1 million proposal by Johnson Controls to replace 347 outdated lights downtown with LED lights.
If approved, the lights would be installed by Nov. 23, 2013.
Johnson Controls says the current decorative lights, which the city owns, were installed in the 1980s and are outdated. The lights cost the city $6,995 a year to replace and maintain. Johnson Controls says the LED lights are lower maintenance and would eventually save the city money in operation costs. The lights have a 23-year lifespan, and would eventually pay for themselves.
The new lights will occasionally have to be replaced but are expected to be at 70 percent of their original brightness in 23 years.

Martinelli's is expanding and I think there have been two additional announcements about new sit down to eat restuarants in the last few weeks - and did I hear something about a bakery? This is a good idea. Fewer light poles = same or more light with more energy efficiency.

Why don't they use the money to rebuilt the bridge that they just closed on Greeley St. just by Waters True Value and the Fairgrounds. Oh, but that would make sense.

It's your fault Salina is spending tax money on stupid B.S. You had the opportunity to choose the city commissioner. All you can do now is find enough people to agree with you and petition it.

Why should the public always have to do the leg work for idiot people in office who forget what they pledged when they were running? How about making it policy that if spending more than $XXXX, you have to get the public to vote on it. Heck, they could stop by County/City Building and vote there.

I say replace the bridge! Sure would save money for those of us who are forced to drive around it! It would not cost 3 million dollars to replace it, and would help out many people in Salina. Oh I forgot, the people who are making these choices don't care about the people in Salina, they are more concerned with leaning poles and sacks with trees in them that they call "art"

Let's see. . .7K to replace each year. 3.1 million divided by 7000.00 is 442 years. Keep as is! Use the money for something that's 'needed'. Have a nice day!

We need to start a petition to force the city council to replace the bridge. If they are able to tear the bridge out and build the little walk bridge it will be one more step towards the river thing which we all voted down a few years ago. This has become such a joke. What is the malfunction here? We voted the river walk down. That should have been the end of the story! For some unbelievable reason they simply cannot let go of their pipe dream. We need to put this fire out once and for all.

Well look who we have on the commission who will benefit by the lights directly? Oh its good old Barb who just happens to work for the restaurant and then we have good old Aaron who would also benefit directly, This is bs put the money where it is really needed. Someone in the city evidently let poor building of the bridge get by and now they close it to please thise who want the river crap to go through just like those that wanted to spend 400k on that scrap iron on 9th they call art. Either the commission votes to redo the bridge or recall petitions need to be started getting them all off of the commission and then a new commission needs to fire the city manager whose a big jerk getting paid under the table to sway commission votes. Well second throught maybe he is not a jerk because he is padding his bank account.

One other thing it has been suggusted before to call these commissioners and city manager both at the city county building and their homes at all hours demanding they reopen the road and fix the bridge. Evidently they ignor what people post but they cannot ignor phone calls.

Don't think it's going to help any of the jobs here at Philip's in Salina...the LED bulbs are made over in China.
