Kansas Leaders Don't Help Schools' Grant Effort
Associated Press - Thu 10:06 AM 12/06/2012
Topeka School Superintendent Julie Ford says that Gov. Sam Brownback and U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran declined to help the district obtain a three-year Race to the Top Grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Topeka school district leaders say Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and the state's two U.S. senators refused to help it secure a $40 million federal grant.
Topeka School Superintendent Julie Ford said Wednesday that Brownback and U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran declined to
help the district obtain a three-year Race to the Top Grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Representatives for the three political leaders say the grant encourages the use of Common Core standards. They say implementing
the standards will be costly, and bring more federal interference into state education.
U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins wrote a letter supporting the district's grant application.
The Topeka school district was told recently that it will not be considered for the grant.

Gotta cut federal spending somewhere. When it is in your own backyard, republicans cry louder than liberals.

IamMe, I totally agree with you, gotta cut federal spending somewhere. Education?? Do you really think that money will not be allocated to another school district? I could understand if it was set aside to paint all state owned vehicles a nice pink color so they would be the same across the country. We as Kansan's can really hold our heads high as we thumb our noses at federal grant money as the state is heading for their own fiscal cliff.
