Newton Sweeps Salina Central

The Salina Central girls dropped their second straight game on Friday night, falling to Newton 45-42.
The Mustangs used an 8-0 run over the end of the first and start of the second quarters to lead 12-6, but Newton scored 14 of the next 18 points to take the lead. The Mustangs used a three from Brooke Peters to pull within one at halftime, 20-19.
In the second half, Newton built a 30-24 lead, but the Mustangs answer back with a 9-0 run to take a 33-30 lead with 6:38 to play on a pair of Shaelyn Martin free throws.
The two teams would trade the lead back and forth before Newton took the last lead change on a three by Taylor Stahly with 3:25 to go. The Mustangs' last gasp inbounds play was stolen by Newton in the final seconds as the Railers held on for the win.
The game featured 11 lead changes and six ties.
Hailey Mayfield led the Mustangs with 12 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter, while Peters added 10. Martin added nine and leading-scorer Emily Wood was limited to four points for Salina Central.
The 1-2 Mustangs are at home against Maize South on Tuesday.
The Salina Central boys led by 11 in the first half, and seven in the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold on in a 55-52 loss to Newton.
The Mustangs used an 8-0 run to build a 25-14 lead with 3:55 to play in the first half. However, Newton would score 21 of the next 27 points over the next eight and a half minutes to take a 35-31 lead. The spurt was capped with an 8-0 Railer run.
Salina Central would answer back. While Newton led 37-35 after three, the Mustangs scored 12 of the first 15 points in the fourth quarter and appeared to be in control, leading 47-40 with 4:49 to go. However, the Mustangs would add just five points down the stretch, while Newton would score 15 more, taking the lead for good on a banked-in three with three seconds left, putting the Railers up 53-52.
The Railers would intercept the inbounds pass and hit two more free throws to seal the win.
Treyton Hines led Salina Central with 14 points. Justin Bengtson and Mark Vaughn each scored 12 points. The Mustangs turned the ball over 22 times.
The 0-3 Mustangs host Maize South on Tuesday.
