Mustangs Cruise to Pair of Wins over South

The Salina Central girls used a 14-0 run over the first and early second quarters to seize control, and were never threatened in a 38-28 win over cross-town rival Salina South.
With the game tied at three thanks to treys from Mackenzie Morris and Megan Holloway, the Mustangs mounted a 14-0 run, holding South scoreless for nine minutes, building a 17-3 lead. The Cougars chipped away and made it a 25-12 game at halftime.
South picked up a point on Central in the third, but the Mustangs led 29-17 after three.
In the fourth quarter, South climbed within eight with 5:21 to go on a bucket by Cassidy Cook, but Brooke Peters hit a tough shot on the left block and was fouled, completing a three-point play to boost the Central lead back to 11. South would get within six with 50 seconds left, but the Mustangs hit their free throws to hold on for the win.
Emily Wood led all scorers with 15 points for Central. Megan Holloway led South with 11 while Cook added 10.
The Mustangs are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in AVCTL Division I play. The Mustangs host Hutchinson on Tuesday.
The Cougars are 3-1 overall and 1-1 in AVCTL Division I. The Cougars travel to Derby on Tuesday.
The Salina Central boys also used a big first quarter run, then added to it in the third quarter in a 62-31 blowout of rival Salina South.
The Mustangs sprinted out to a 7-0 lead before South got on the board with a Justin Stonebraker three with 4:36 to go in the first quarter. Central would respond with four straight threes, two by Mark Vaughn, one by Max Kuhn and another from Treyton Hines, to lead 19-3. The Mustangs led 19-8 at the end of one.
The second quarter was more balanced, with Central regaining a 16-point lead, only to see South again cut it to 11 at halftime, 25-14.
The Mustangs put the game away to open the second half, scoring the first 15 points of the third quarter. The span included a three-pointer and a three-point play from Hines and a four-point play from Vaughn as the Mustangs went up 40-14 with 5:02 to play in the third.
The Mustangs would lead by as much as 33 down the stretch.
Vaughn scored a season-high 19 points, while Hines added a season-high 18.
Conner Ryan and Justin Stonebraker each led South with 8 points.
The Mustangs are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in AVCTL Division I. They host Hutchinson on Tuesday.
The Cougars are 1-3 overall and 1-1 in AVCTL Division I. They travel to Derby on Tuesday.
