For some, a northeast campground has become a cold, squalid last resort before homelessness.

Campground 3 at Clinton State Park is home to more than a dozen year-round residents. They must haul in their own water in the wintertime because campsite water sources are shut off.

Gene and Diane Wallace are living in their recreational vehicle with their two cats. The Wallaces lived in Lawrence before becoming full-time RV residents in August 2011. They weren't prepared to weather the winter in their vehicle. But they found themselves stuck after transmission repairs and a hotel stay set them back financially.

I throught Kansas laws prevented people from doing this especially in state parks.

I do not have a problem with people doing this. As the divide between poverty and middle class increases, we will likely see more of this. I don't know these folks' story, but I can tell you that kind of living is hard. I'm sure they wouldn't be there if they felt they had other choices.

I could not disagree more. Our parks are not shanty towns for vagrants. Its time for the state to move these people on before more problems arise.

I would think this would be a better place for them to live than in shelters or under bridges. If they have a functioning place to live leave them alone. Everyone goes through tough times and these people are making the best of it and maintaining some dignity.
