TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt plans to ask legislators to approve a new law he says will help prosecutors fight gang activity.

The Republican attorney general and former state senator says the recommendation for a new anti-racketeering law is a product of a gang task force he assembled in 2012.

The proposal would let prosecutors go after gangs for alleged patterns of criminal activity as well as single criminal acts. Schmidt says it would be another way to tackle what he calls the rising presence of street gangs in Kansas.

The 2013 legislative session begins January 14.

t-bone, are you suggesting the AG do nothing? Should we continue to be patient, hoping the problem will go away on it's own? If the AG were a Democrat would it then be OK for such a program? God forbid someone (of either party) make an attempt to solve the problem. Would you like to be in charge of eliminating gangs from our state? As soon as you ask for some cash to get the program rolling, I will unleash a barage of nasty comments regarding the lining of your pockets and and midnight knitting parties.

The infiltration of organized gangs into the Salina area has been happening for years. If this gang activity is not stopped soon it willl escalate into much more serious violence. I am sure that it will cost the taxpayers more money, what doesn't, but the alternative is not something anyone will like. If a anti-racketeering law can provide any assistance to law enforcement then by all means move forward with it.
