Kansas Considering New Red Card For Food Stamps

Tawny Stottlemire, of the Kansas Association of County Action Programs, says the proposed redesign could return Kansas to an era when public assistance recipients were unnecessarily stigmatized.

Kansas officials are considering replacing the current benefits card for residents who get food stamps with a bright red card.

The current Vision cards have an artistic impression of a sunflower, while a prototype of the new card is red with the "Kansas Benefits Card" label.

The Kansas Department of Children and Families says the existing card would be replaced because the agency has a new vendor.

The Vision cards were introduced in the 1990s to allow food stamp recipients to use a plastic card to buy food at stores and for people who get temporary cash assistance.

I don't think it is fair to make recipients of food assistance a big deal----there are a lot of good people who can't find jobs - and some that are lazy I must admit - but most food stamp recipients are for those with children and they can't be blamed for their parents-not the children's fault-----food assistance is for food---those cards should be less noticable - not used for cash/fast food etc. That's not sense----

Better yet would publish all the employers in town and how much each employee gets in government assistance. People would be surprised. Salina has become a welfare town.

I work with children everyday whose parents work very hard at low paying jobs. They need help from food assistance. Other children have parents whose health have failed. I think to change the color of the vision card to red would only degrade and humiliate these people further. I think that it is extremely cruel and serves no purpose.

I agree it is not wise or fair to ostracize someone who is taking public assistance. And this red card idea bothered me right up to the point that I paid for my next purchase. It was then that I notice my own debit card is bright red! Now I think this entire argument is much ado about nothing.

Once again the people we elect to look after all our interests have dropped the ball. A red card will definately draw ones attention or just remind people that it is a state card for welfare. There may be other red cards out there but now people that have those also we be marked as welfare recipients.

One more issue ksal Todd P I complained to you months ago about this guy having a like id like mine and you ignored it. Now he is on here making unwarranted coments about me causing me to defend myself. Others are noticing it as well. In the past you have come out and said Ksal will not tolerate it but yet you do nothing to him. Why is he a relative or someone who works at the station so you do nothing. Time to enforce your words and policy and bar him from here at least with this ID.

Aurora I firmly believe you are iamnot. I also believe that you created the other name for yourself as a smoke screen. Things on here were pretty normal until you started attacking me again which I will not put up with. You broke the rules and iamnotgonnagetu needs to be gone along with anyother id you start this with.

"Fredd" is right all this complaining about the color of the card means nothing. Anyone that goes around worrying about the color of the card they see someone using needs to get a life. We would be much better off doing as "Chatter11" mentioned and change how the cards are used. If we really are worrying about the kids getting fed then using this system to buy their children a "fast food" meal day after day, instead of buying good wholesome food and cooking them a decent meal, needs to be changed. Also these cards were never meant to be a means to get cash they should be for groceries only and even then there should be some limitations on what can be purchased with them.

Why are food stamp users allowed cash back to purchase their cigarettes & alcohol?? WHY are illegals allowed food stamps & WIC while sending all their money to Mexico thru the money center at major retailer? One hispanic was screaming at cashier "Give it to me" when denied the items not approved through Food Stamps! Not only do hispanics take more or non-approved items on WIC & Food Stamps, they hold up grocery line knowing the Mgr will give it to them. WE the consumers pay the price difference w/ higher prices. Off to the money center, sending their money to Mexico! Price matching fraud by hispanics.... I know some whites, blacks & asians abuse the system, hispanics appear to be the worst I've pondered if Mexico is so corrupt that scamming is a way of life for them?? Now Dillions will not let you cash a check for over $25 because of these illegal M exicans who bounce checks under different names. Many of them have a bunch of different id's but once again law enforcement in Salina just turns their heads the other way.
