A group working at bringing a grocery store to North Salina is planning a Wednesday evening event.

"Salinans for East Iron Grocery Store" will hold a petition pledge rally.

According to the group, there will be a petition pledge rally Wednesday evening at 5:30, at the parking lot of the former Dillons grocery store at 511 E. Iron.

The petition drive will be conducted for two weeks, ending Feb 6th, and asks signers to help circulate petitions of support and pledge to patronize the store when shopping in the area. A Facebook page will be announced at the rally.

A lot of people don't have a grocery store in their neighborhood, so a replacement store in the area will help fill a critical need, according to Jon Blanchard, one of the local organizers of the rally.

With community support, the Salina market is large enough to support a small to mid-size grocery store in that area, said Greg Stephens. Blanchard and Stephens attended the "Strengthening our Stores, Strengthening our Communities" Grocery Summit held in Manhattan last summer.

To assist with this effort, or for more information contact John Blanchard at 801-652-2333, or Greg Stephens at 785-819-6887, or gregs3@cox.net.

North Salina has been without a grocery store since the Dillons store on Iron closed back in October, and staff transferred to a new store at the corner of Ohio and Cloud Streets. The Iron Avenue store was the smallest of the the Dillons stores in Salina, and was the only grocery store in Salina located north of Crawford Street.

North end certianly needs a grocery store but who is prepared to take the financial risk at this location? Obviously it was not a lucrative location and someone is going to have to invest some money and it dang well better not be me, the tax payer. Besides this information is not totally right. Isn't there a Paraire Land Market just south of Iron on 5th Street. So yes there is a place to get some grocerys.

After Dillons "refurbished" the store and streamlined the stock it became neccesary to shop elsewhere. As opposed to the 400K artwork on S. 9th this would be a wiser and more beneficial thing for the city to do. Maybe a tax abatement would be good. I am fortunate enough to own a car. Many of the store's customers were not.

As much as I love living in and love our North end... I really don't think a petition is going to help do anything. I wish we had one up here on the North side too but I sure wouldn't invest my money in it. I don't think all the tax payers of Salina should have to help with any tax incentives either. The store should be able to sink or swim on it's own merits.

I'd enjoy seeing a grocery store open up there! I'll sign the petition. Never seen the Prairie Land Market either.

Sure would like to see another store open. Dillions prices at that new place are out of sight. Guess they want to pay for the store they built real fast.

I went into the Prairie Land Market and their eggs were priced over $3.00 per dozen. They were "organic" but still too costly for my budget.

Won't shop at Prairie Land Market. Like farm fresh eggs, but not at $3.00 a dozen. Absolutely fine with the food at Dillons, chemicals and all. Not going to pay out the nose for chickens which weren't given steroids and pork products where the pigs were not hurt during the butchering process.

Kissmynut that store was very profitable for its size and what they offered. But when Kroger got wind that Hyvee was interested in that property at Ohio and Cloud they jumped to buy the land and build that store to keep competition out so they choose to close the Iron Street Dillions. They can care less about th low income people it mostly affected. The first visit to the new store was met with higher prices and narrow isles where its difficult to have two carts next to each other. Plus the parking lot was designed for vw beatles not trucks and suv's.
