Conservative Kansas Congressman Riles GOP Leaders

Tim Huelskamp contends he's reflecting the views of his district, and he was re-elected last year without opposition.

Congressman Tim Huelskamp's disputes with fellow Republicans who lead the U.S. House are generating headlines and stirring up constituents in his central and western Kansas district.

But such spats are becoming old hat for Huelskamp, who since his 2010 election to the U.S. House has become a congressional spokesman for the tea party.

He's angered fellow Republicans along the way, raising questions about his effectiveness representing the state.

GOP leaders have stripped Huelskamp of a plum assignment on the House Budget Committee and what has been for decades Kansas' automatic seat on the Agriculture Committee.

He scrapped regularly with less conservative governors and legislative leaders before he was elected to Congress.

Huelskamp contends he's reflecting the views of his district, and he was re-elected last year without opposition.

This is old news, but since you brought it up: Mr. Huelskamp doesn’t represent my views. I wish he’d just go away. He does nothing to help the State of Kansas or the First District. It’s one thing to have a position on an issue but his refusal to find middle ground and work for the greater good is disturbing. Politics is the art of compromise. If both the Left and the Right would learn that we would all be better off. (By the way, since Tim is big on cutting spending, lead the way… give up your fat farm subsidy. Or is it easier to talk about cutting money given to less well connected people?)

From the conservatives I have talked with, all support Huelskamp. He has pretty much done everything he said he would do, which is rare for a politician. It is easy to run with talking points, but I personally do the research of why he voted the way he did.

The question isn't if he is right or not. The issue is how he goes about it. Of course government in DC is too big. Tim has a decade plus track record of not being a team player - even with conseratives that agree government is too big. It's like walking up to a 400 lb person and telling them they are fat. Duh! They know that and that approach isn't going to work. With him isolated and having reached the ceiling as a politician, he won't really help Kansas.

lindbag you apparently are behind the times we need more people like mr huelskamp to buck the system and represent his voter district and not go with the flow I commend him on his efforts, As for fat farm subsidy those are all but gone for farmers I hope your not on welfare or have kids in the school system getting free lunches cause guess what those are farm subsidies too yea thats right and thats most of the total farm bill so before you go spouting off about things you don't have a clue about do some research

..unless he sees himself as the next Ron Paul. If so, he needs to articulate that his vision is to vote no on everything and let the people of Kansas decided if that is what they want.

This guy and many others like him is willing and able to blow up the world economy to get THEIR way. This will destroy fiscal policy for another generation. As has the Great Recession. Huelskamp disturbingly is always on news shows on every network. He never answers direct questions and always reverts to his talking points.

article in the Wall Street Journal (I think) within the last two weeks. Tim, his brother and his parents have gotten over $2,000,000 in direct farm payment over the last few years.
