A group hoping to bring a grocery store to North Salina hosted a rally Wednesday evening.

Jon Blanchard with "Salinans for East Iron Grocery Store" stopped into the KSAL Morning News to talk about the event. "We want people to join us and show a potential grocery store operator they can make it work," he said. "My thinking is if I shop four times a month, I'm doing one of those shopping trips at that store."

Blanchard's message to a new grocery store owner is simple, "I know that you're an underdog - and I'm for the underdog." A petition pledge rally was held Wednesday evening at 5:30, at the parking lot of the former Dillons grocery store at 511 E. Iron.

The petition drive will be conducted for two weeks, ending Feb 6th, and asks signers to help circulate petitions of support and pledge to patronize the store when shopping in the area.

To assist with this effort, or for more information contact Jon Blanchard at 801-652-2333.

North Salina has been without a grocery store since the Dillons store on E. Iron closed back in October, and staff transferred to a new store at the corner of Ohio and Cloud Streets.

Let's support these efforts as Kroger has put it to us from having some of the highest prices for food in the state to price fixing on their gas prices. Maybe we can get a good store that will be fair to its customers and also provide the service we need in this area of town.

Open a Food4Stamps and they will have profit like no business has ever seen in this town. I am sure some enterprising arabic americans could be found to manage it as efficiently as a convienience store.

So is Mr Blanchard wanting to do it the old fashion way, like borrow money and open his own store?Maybe just barking at the moon like a lot of Americans do nowadays.

Wow! I stopped by there last night and I have only seen this type of enthusiasm one time before. Kudo's to Blanchard and everyone who helped on this event. The people who showed up while I was there were certainly supportive. One could really feel a strong groundswell of support.

What about the people that live to the north, east and west of town they now have to drive all the way across town to shop. So bringing stores the the north end of town is a good idea. Our city can grow in all direction not just to the south!!

Where was that chamber guy with the bad memory? I would think he should be working on this. But he evidently does not care about those less fortunate that live in town. The cost of one of his suits could feed a family for a couple of weeks. Besides he is a corporate person who could care less what Kroger or anyother major company charges their customers. Would not surprise me if he was paid to look the other way intead of finding another grocery store to come into Salina.

That chamber guy is Dennis L. and you do not think he would show up or comment on this story. He is to busy running and taking care of the big dogs. Ask yourself this how many business's of any kind has he brought into North Salina?

theenforcer is not well informed, as usual. Mr Lauver has spent considerable time working with prospective investors. It would obviously be good for Salina to have at least one full service Grocery store north of Crawford.
