The Topeka school district's police force is requesting high-powered semi-automatic rifles after reviewing its security following the deadly school shooting in Connecticut.

The nearly 14,000-student Topeka district has 10 officers on a district-led force and contracts for another 10 officers through the local police department. Director of school safety Ron Brown says the district's force carries only semi-automatic handguns, while the officers contracted through the police department also carry semi-automatic rifles. When the semi-automatic rifles are in the schools, they are secured in gun safes.

Brown recently told the school board that he wants his officers to have semi-automatic rifles, too. He is requesting Colt AR-15s. He says that would equalize the firepower in a confrontation with someone armed with an assault rifle.

No action has been taken.

What good is it going to do them if they are locked up in a safe. Before they could get them out a shooter would kill alot of people.

They need to issue weapons to all the students and the schools would be safer. Heck, a highway patrol trooper and a Salina police officer both shot themselves on separate occasions at the firing range; imagine what they could manage to screw up with automatic weapons! We can all rest easier at night because the Imperious Leader El Presidente' said the public doesn't need to be armed and they will protect us.

If the guns are locked up many will die. I cannot believe the panic over this sad thing that happened. I blame the news media for over covering things like this.

I blame the televisions for displaying what the media is covering, I think it is time to have a serious discussion covering banning TV's or at the least television control. TV remotes are a dangerous weapon of mass destruction and should be operated in a responsible manner.

Looks like t-bone victory2012 iamgonnagetu3 has produced another name for themselves. They much really love the guy who originally had the name to copy it time an again. Plus iama4 shows his lack of intelligence with his above posting. But then again he is only on here to bully people and does not have the guts to back up his words as 2 people have challenged lately and he evidently was a no show from what I read. Pure low life.
