Salina Hospital Official Hurt in Hunting Accident
Associated Press - Thu 09:47 AM 01/31/2013
Joel Phelps, chief operating officer of Salina Regional Health Center, suffered pellet injuries mostly to his legs in the accident Saturday.
A Salina hospital official sustained minor injuries when he was accidentally shot during a weekend hunting excursion in northern Kansas.
Joel Phelps, chief operating officer of Salina Regional Health Center, suffered pellet injuries mostly to his legs in the accident Saturday. Phelps says he was injured when another hunter tripped and the gun that hunter was carrying discharged. He declined to name the other hunter.
A Salina trauma surgeon who was also part of the hunting group treated Phelps at the ranch and said the wounds were superficial.
Phelps says he was back at work Monday and that he reported the incident Wednesday after learning that all shooting incidents have to be reported.

Most likely the shooter was drunk. The doctor would know he is required to contact law enforcement when treating a gunshot wound. I wonder if the hunt was paid for by the hospital?

This does sound a little funny, there are a lot of things that may have come into play, such as alcohol, drugs, trespassing, hunting without a license, firearms violations, etc. The list could go on and on. And none of the doctors knew that they should report a gunshot to the law, how many other people with gunshots have walked out of the hospital emergency room. Phelps returned to work, they should have all been suspended for failing to report the incident, since this was some type of cover up on their part.

Hey y'all need to shut up, this states it was a hunting accident. Why would it sound fishy? Sounds to me that y'all are some idiotic salina pieces of trash. I'm a hunter, and I know that this is every hunters worst nightmare. Have some respect for both parties involved, y'all probably wouldn't have gone back to work on Monday after that accident because all y'all are probably to lazy to work. All you probably get gov checks. And also don't you know that the one who tripped feels terrible about all this as well. Seriously if y'all aren't hunters and don't understand this type of thing then all of you get lost.

d@#$ Cheney felt bad after drinking and accidentl shooting someone too. But he didn`t get to hide from it like this person any of us normal poor people as you put it would be guilty until proven innocent if we waited 4 days to report it but that would not be possible police would have been notified when we got ex-rays at hospital!!!

Well Dumas if your trying to not say he was drinking, why would you? You clearly accused these people of drinking. And to be honest that is not your place to assume. Because you are just being ignorant. Why don't you just stop accusing people and get a life. What makes you think that you can go around acting like you know it all. You don't the only ones who do is the ones involved. And neither of us was involved. And you stated normal poor person. Why would you think that you can bring that into it. It's an accident it doesn't matter what a person makes, it's an accident. Seriously your not a hunter you don't understand. Think of this why instead of bashing these guys, why not thank them for the great hospital our community has. 10 years ago it was crap, but within the last 6 years it has become one of the best in the state. Without guys like this we wouldn't have what we do in our hospital.

I was not and do not know those that were involved, but I too am hunter safety certified. My argument here is that it was an accident, and don't accuse those that were involved because can you imagine what the shooter is feeling inside. He is probably tore up about it. Do you think he woke up and wanted that to happen. No he probably was looking forward to a day in the field with his friends.

@ youknowme I agree with you about what you said about the hunting accident, But I would also debate with you on the state of the hospital 10 years ago and today. That is all I will say on a social site.

He didn't report it till wednesday?? This guy is in a top position at our Hospital, and he claims he "didn't know shooting incidents need reported"!!?? OK, well, that's nice he was playing ignorant here, but I heard a Judge say one time to a guy in court, ignorance of the law is no excuse!! Sure, it may not have been a major injury, sure, it maybe was an accident here but that does not excuse the HOSPITAL in this, THEY DID know shooting/gun incidents need to be reported!!!

This story is a case study in a bunch of idiots, with only a whiff of the facts, using their keyboards to vomit all sorts of garbage all over the comments section. Should we be suprised, I think not. Not everything in life is a conspiracy. I don't know why it is so hard for some folks to grasp that concept. Put your tin foil hats back on and relax.
