Horst: Armed Security at Schools is Local Issue
Associated Press - Tue 06:22 AM 02/05/2013
A member of the State Board of Education says arming teachers or guards in Kansas schools should be a local decision.
Deena Horst addressed the issue during a weekend legislative forum in the north-central Kansas community.
Horst is a retired teacher from Salina who also served 16 years in the Kansas House.
She says she's "personally fine" with having armed security in schools. But she believes it should be up to local districts to decide if they want to arm teachers or have armed guards in schools.
Horst also says the Board of Education has found that all districts have the opportunity to get some training with Homeland Security in Kansas, but only a few have done so.

Armed security is not the answer better security is the answer. I do not care if its schools or the 3rd floor at the courthouse if some mental person is going to do something like Conn. they will do it armed guards are not the answer.

Cleaner, are you serious? What 'better security' are you proposing? Metal detectors manned by unarmmed people. Yeah, that'll stop a mad man in his tracks. Unless you are proposing fortifying all school buildings with armored plating and vault doors on time locks. Honestly you can't PREVENT anything, just limit the damage they may be able to do.

Failed logic ......Do you think the 5 deputies on the 3 rd floor of the city county building would stand a chance if some mad man srepped off the elevator firing an automatic weapon?
Aurora.

Your right just because a security guard or teacher has a gun does not mean they will get to the guy in time to save lives.

Iamgonnagetyou, so we should completely disarm everybody and let that mad man step off the elevator and have free reign until he runs out of ammunition, gives up, and kills himself? You guys don't get it. We have never said it will save all lives. If somebody has, they are living in just as much of a dream world as those who say we should disarm everybody. However, armed security WILL save more lives than not having it. Also, I'm not talking about needing just one armed person, there needs to be many. Look at CO back in '97. There was an armed officer, but he was outside, and it was just the one guy. Unfortunately probably didn't help much. Had there been more, or armed and trained teachers, the outcome very likely would have been much different.
