Sheriff on Escapee: "No Idea What He's Capable Of"
Jeff Garretson - Tue 11:54 AM 02/12/2013
Sheriff Kochanowski told reporters on Tuesday proceedures that led up to Brown's escape included human error.
Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski held a morning news conference - as multiple agencies continue to search for a convicted child killer who slipped out of the jail yesterday.
"I want people to know that Antonio Brown is a murderer," Kochanowski said.
"He is loose, we have no idea where he is at. We have no idea what he is capable of."
Sheriff Kochanowski says procedures that led up to Brown's escape included human error.
"Somehow - and it has to be human error, the door that these people in the room they were held in, was open on the outside. And that's when he took advantage of that mistake is what it is," he said.
The Sheriff told reporters Tuesday that 29-year-old Antonio Brown was in a holding cell with two other prisoners when a door remained opened long enough for him to slip through it undetected.
Sheriff Kochanowski tells KSAL News that 10-minutes may have elapsed before staff realized he was gone.
Brown pleaded no contest in January to first-degree murder and child abuse.
The charges stemmed from the beating death of 14-month-old Clayden Urbanek in November 2011. Brown had been held in the Mitchell County jail in Beloit since his arrest and was to be sentenced on Tuesday.
The Sheriff says the US Marshall's Office is now joining forces with the Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigation as the search widens for Brown.

Yea and leave the murderer in a room with a door he can escape from. Also leave him there without shakles on making it more easy. Then the sheriff wants us tax payers to give him a larger jail. Yea right dream on sheriff. Further murderers should not be sent out to another facility they should remain locked up here. Send the druggies or the bad check writers, parole violaters and such but not murderers especially when you cannot keep them from escaping. Human error falls back on you sheriff so resign or face a recall petition.

Well at least someone noticed he was gone. Unlike some years ago when the inmates escaped from the Dickinson County jail and was counted as being housed, eating meals, etc. for some time. That was a good one for the late night t.v. talk shows. There has always been speculation however, how they really did get out of the jail?? Not until a federal marshal came for his people was it discovered they were gone. The real point here is this guy needs to be caught and no amount of finger pointing, bashing the Saline County jail is helping. Not a good incident to happen no matter where. Human error, you bet! This is the way human error is corrected and hopefully this will never happen again. I feel this guy will show up shortly, be it dead or alive. I am quite confident all that can be done is being done.

Wow. Agree with all the comments below. Well said. I don't live in the county but recommend you all petition this moron. My guess is this murderer will get shot by someone with a concealed carry, unless he's real smart. Either way, Sheriff old b#lls needs to go.

@TheMan: It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that letting a murderer escape is not something you dismiss as a "human error" If you want to brush this under the carpet fine, but this citizen and many other's will not.

Most of these comments, I agree with. However, I'm not too sure signing a petition will get the sheriff to resign. Also, keep in mind they realized he was gone after 10 minutes, not 10 hours. That makes authorities not too far behind him (so we think). Either way, we're lucky it was early and not too late. And thank you to those of you who left smart remarks about the sheriff's quotes on Mr. Brown being a murderer and not knowing what he's capable of. Unless you have been living underneath a rock, you have heard about what he did. I'm pretty sure the sheriff just wants all of us on our toes and to take this seriously, because most people who kill once will do it again. I'm sure none of you needed to know any of that, but, judging from some of the content of your comments, you may have been unaware of the meaning of the quotes.

The sheriff has tried to update the jail and expand to prevent something exactly like this. However, this city & county has decided that it is not necessary. Great logic! The current jail is not sufficient to hold the amount of prisoners this city/county has! It seems to me that everyone who has commented thus far wants to shift blame to everyone but the community. If you think you can do better run for sheriff, fill out an application, or support those who want to build a correctional facility that will serve this community.

Get that petition going, maybe you will get 25 or so of your cronies to sign it. Hang in there Sheriff Glen! We have been friends for many many years and you still have my confidence on what you believe will make things better if we just had a bigger and better jail facility. Most of all, don't let the threat of a petition that won't hold water upset you. After all my friend you are elected!

Getagrip now I know exactly who you are. Hopefully you will take care of your friend after he is recalled. Until that time he is going to be under a microscope and he will be judged on everything he does. I think the state needs to come in an investigate also. Leaving a murderer in a holding cell not handcuffed or shackled is more than just a human error. I think anyone in law enforcement reaches 65 years old they are done and cannot serve as a cop sheriff or private investigator.

notperfect no he did not murder that child but it was his responsibility to keep the murderer in behind bars. There is no way this guy should have been transported anywhere but to prison after being sentenced. The sheriff is responsible for the running of the jail and he is well aware of the policies when dealing with convicted murderers. I am on the bandwagon calling for him to resign. He is to old to be in the position he is in and his thinking is not that of a younger person. We all have seen this in our parents as they aged they are not the people they were when they were 40 or 50 years old.

ksstudent you use an old argument but if we used that same argument for everything where would we be. The simple fact is I might not be the best fit for alot of positions but there are people that are. When a killer is on the lose because of a Sheriff Department being run by a sheriff that goes behind peoples backs to get what he wants but no longer can act in or manage the position given him needs to realize it is time to resign. If not then its up to others to have him removed by recall. This is but one instance that he has dropped the ball but the most significant.

This is a great object lesson of the results that arise because of the always negative approach taken by iamgonnagetyou and alter ego Aurora. It is hard to take him seriously on the rare occasion when he may be correct. Within the past week, a terrible accident was reported on this website. A car rolled and a human being was killed. iamgonnagetyou's reaction was to focus on "why is KSAL publishing stores from Great Bend?" instead of on the tragic fact that a person had died. This constantly negative attitude about virtually everything leads people to be tone deaf it situations where he might be correct. People who read this website but never post here have commented that he must be "the time of person who will complain about how cold free ice cream is" if he was given free ice cream. That is no way to live and is not the reputation a person probably really wants - even if it is in a online environment.

If a positive "glass half full" person like me writes that the sherrif should make personnel changes, I suspect it would be taken more seriously because I'm not the one that is predictibly negative - which makes reasonable people tone deaf to iamgonnagetyou. In this case, he may be like the blind squirrel who eventually finds a nut or the stopped clock that is right twice a day, but it is hard to say because it is a challenge to focus on the message, rather than the messenger. If iamgonnagetyou would take a less "everything is negative" attitude, then his comments about the sherrif (which may indeed by accurate) could be taken a little more seriously.

Once again I am being bullied by Logical one of many names he or she uses on here. I have tracted the names used and they are not happy about that. Whatever name is being used against me alway's tries to connect me with someone else evidently thinking I am like they are. He or she even has gone as far as taking a like name as mine on two or three occassions to no avail. As far as my stand on the news KSAL motto is "KSAL is your number one source for salina local news, weather, sports, auctions". When you type in KSAL on your computer it brings up "SALINA LOCAL NEWS, WEATHER AND SPORTS". To me this means Salina and surrounding area's of 40 miles or so give or take. It does not mean Topeka, Great Bend, Goodland, Wichita or Kansas City."

If KSAL wants to print news from everywhere in Kansas they need to make changes not to mislead anyone. Another point is that their person Todd P. continues to comment that the radio station will not stand for others attacking others on here but this is another example of them turning their heads as I take Logicals post as attacking myself and will protect my interests.

Logical evidently likes the games he or she plays but I follow the rules on here and the only time I attack anyone even if you wish to call it that is when I am bullied and attacked and nothing is done by KSAL. This is still a free country and I have a right to get my views especially as a tax payer and how things are being run in our area. From the many many months Magnolia has been closed to the latest with the Sheriff dropping the ball big time with this murderer escaping. I like how Salina used to be many years ago when law enforcement top priority was on crime. That slowly went away because I feel crime does not produce revenue like writing tickets for seatbelts or other traffic violations. That is important also but crime should be the number 1 focus.

In closing I will say that I will comment on stories some may like my comments others may not but that is America. Sadly our country has become a group of sleep just following along and we all know where that has got us especially in our own Salina. So logical and all your other names all I can say to you is that you would not attack me if we were in a room together because people like you do not have the guts to speak out in front of someone or in public unless you are behind a keyboard. I apologize to all those that have had to read these paragraphs but as I said I will protect myself against inappropriate and slanderous comments.

Between logical and iamgonna there was a whole lot of reading. I have noticed that logical likes to bully people and in his statements was going after this other person plain and simple. I have also noticed that iamgonna speaks what they feel and most of the time is right on whether the rest of us want to believe so or not and it produces for many of us to think about the other side of whatever is being commented on. I do not always agree with iamgonna but there have been many of times I have had to. Concerning this matter of the escaped murderer I have to agree with those that say this was handled entirely wrong by those in charge and I hope they do not sweep this under the carpet when the guy is caught like so many other things in our city and county are done so often.
