Area Remains Vigilant As Search For Killer Continues
KSAL Staff - Wed 07:58 AM 02/13/2013
29-year-old Antonio Brown walked out of a holding cell Monday after it was inadvertently opened. Brown then walked out of an open garage door after the departure of a transport vehicle.
The area remains vigilant as the search for a child killer who escaped from the Saline County Jail enters its third day.
For the second day in a row Salina USD 305 schools are on "heightened awareness". Schools are on heightened security. Doors in school buildings are locked and building entry is being monitored. Normal activities continue inside all schools.
Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says that 29-year-old Antonio Brown walked out of a holding cell Monday after it was inadvertently opened. Brown then walked out of an open garage door after the departure of a transport vehicle.
Kochanowski says the escape took up to 10 minutes to discover.
Back on January 9th Brown pleaded no contest in Saline County District court to first degree murder during commission of a felony. He also pleaded no contest to two counts of child abuse in connection with the 2011 beating death of 14-month-old Clayden Lee Urbanek.
Wednesday morning he still was not back in custody. Brown should be considered dangerous. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.

Once again the actions of the Sheriff department is being played down. Why was he not in handcuffs and shackles awaiting to going to a cell, After all he was not a drunk or bad check writter he was a murderer plain and simple and should have been treated as such. Now a hugh amount of money has been spent this guy is still loose and the Sheriff who is responsible for the actions of those under him still is down playing this whole matter. Guess who is going to pay for all of this? Yes us taxpayers so to do so something else in the budget will have to go by the wayside unless our tax's are increased.

Just curious why comments are deleted? Was it for profanity, threats or security? In the meantime, everyone needs to be vigilante while going about their normal routine. Everyone needs to search their property, especially those in rural areas, but do so cautiously and not alone. This is going to take the community's help, we can assign blame later.

Evidently those making deleted comments are not taxpayers who will be footing the bill for this guy escaping due to the lax procedures at the sheriff's department with murderers.

Once again being a taxpayer here I have to agree. The cost of this guy escaping is not going to come cheap. I am sure there is not anything in the budget to cover this so now we will wait and see where the money comes from to pay for all of this. All they had to do is leave the guy in cuffs and shackles and none of this would of happened. Before anyone says it is easy to second guess no that is not the case here as there are certain procedures with violent criminals that need to be followed and were not.

It is in no way any police officers fault. Its the jailers who handle the inmates. With as much crap as the animals in the saline co jail give them to put up with mistakes happen. And they will find him. Or someone else will.

Sorry but it is the person working whether it be sheriff or police. That is their job and this was no little mistake. Like anyone else if they do not like what goes with the job dealing with boneheads then they can find employee elsewhere. But this job is not like a job say at cozy inn where if they put something on your hamburger by mistake that you did not want it can easily be corrected. Not so when dealing with criminals.

Why do we always look to blame someone or something when something bad happens but not when something good happens? Why hasn't anyone posted anything about all the days, months and years that have gone by without a problem? I salute the people who work in law enforcement. I know that 99.9% of the time, the work is done right. As a society, we don't like to hear good news. To actually say something positive about someone or something in this town, country or world is a rarity. How sad that the majority of people on this website only post negative comments. Hiding behind anonymity gives them the courage to be hateful. Probably the same types that would gossip behind your back and throw you under a bus. Or even better, lie to your face with a smile on theirs. You go, Salina!

Evidently you have not lived in Salina long enought prior to this chief of police or this sheriff took office. Yes we had crime but the police and sheriff had a handle on it so there was not numerous crimes committed day in and day out. Major crimes were solved and with all this both entities managed to enforce traffic laws. Your percentage I would say is more like 90% if I am to guess like you are doing. Leadership in these positions dictates how good or bad the department is run. We currently have two old guys who should be out fishing somewhere under a bridge not guiding to important departments. Those before them knew when it was time to step down and did but for some reason these two do not have that understanding. If they were NFL players it would be like the sheriff being the quarterback and the chief the running back for the Kansas City Chiefs and how would you like that.

sorry it was around then also but they were on top of it and the sellers and users knew prison was not to far away. When law enforcement is at the top of their game druggies and crooks go elsewhere where they will have an easy time doing their thing.

Does it matter what the deleted comments said? All of you are on here complaining about how much you hate the SPD and SCSO, but none of you are doing anything except complaining on the Internet. If the sky in your little world is falling because of the authorities, then maybe you should get up an do something. Most of you are probably adults and are smart enough to do it yet don't do anything.

I have lived in this area since 1974. I would guess your age (I amgonnagetyou) to be very young. If that isn't the case, then what I am hearing is a bitter, disillusioned person who has no interest in being happy and wants to include everyone in their misery and probably pity parties, too. Where the mind goes, the man follows. Think positive, be positive. Or, tell the story that has caused all the hate and discontent emanating from your posts so we can understand why their is so much bitterness in them?!?!? I'm curious.

@ksstudent: As a taxpayer I have every right to complain about the SPD and SCSO. And posting about news stories of the incompetence of both dept is doing something about it. At least people are voicing how they feel and by the sounds of things alot of people have lost all respect for both. Dressing as Santa to bust drivers for seat belts, letting criminals to escape custody (not 1 time but 3 since the first of the year), does little to earn the respect of citizens. Cops or not you have to earn respect not demand it.

I'll continue to enjoy my life, and look for ways to support my community and to encourage those around me and not kick a person when they are down. I shudder to think of all the people who HAVE to listen to the negativity and bitterness spewing from an unhappy, bitter person who can't even remember why they became that way. Here's a hint - it's called self-centeredness and the "if I don't get my way I complain and point fingers never thinking to look at myself to see the real cause for my anger, hurt, pain, bitterness and ego" syndrome so many suffer from. I hope some day this realization clicks so the rest of us don't have to have another "downer" in our lives but instead someone who contributes to society in a positive manner.

Bum you have lived in this area does that mean Topeka, Wichita surely not Salina because if you did you would understand and not be taking the negative side of this issue. Or maybe you are just one of the sheep in life that follows the herd. Hopefully this issue will bring about change in both departments an we once again can have a good safe community.

Is the guy that calls himself BUM the one that lived under the bridge on Iron in a cardboard box? I often wondered what happened to him as he just disappeared off the radar screen after the cops arrested him. I guess another thing swept under the carpet. I have tried not to comment on what I have known for a few years now about how bad the sheriff's department is being run by this sheriff but I believe this is the last straw for him and he would do well to listen to those asking him to resign. If it goes to a recall petition there will be a whole bunch of dirt come out which will be bad for the community and for him. I believe the time is right to step down gracefully.
