Sheriff's Office to Review Escape
Jeff Garretson - Thu 11:55 AM 02/14/2013
Lt. Brent Melander with the Saline County Sheriff's Office, speaks to the media on Thursday morning.
More details are released on the search and capture of escaped child killer Antonio Brown.
Lt. Brent Melander with the Saline County Sheriff's Office, met with reporters on Thursday morning after Brown surrendered to authorities in Wichita on Wednesday night.
Brown was transported back to Salina today and was booked into the the Saline County Jail at 8:30am.
Melander pointed to the work of many agencies - including the U.S. Marshal's Fugitives Task Force who set up a command center at the Sheriff's Office, "They were a big asset to us," he said.
"We had locations throughout the state of Kansas, locations outside the state - basically it had got down to the point where he probably didn't have any place to go."
Antonio Brown made a telephone call Wednesday to agents with the The U..S. Marshal's Task Force around 9:30pm from somewhere in south-Wichita, and was picked up without incident. Lt. Melander said he was very cooperative with deputies this morning.
The Sheriff's Office would not elaborate on how Brown got to Wichita - only to say it's part of the investigation.
Lt. Melander told reporters now that Brown is back in custody, the review of what happened during his escape on Monday afternoon can now begin in earnest, "We will look at everything," he said.
Back on January 9th Brown pleaded no contest in Saline County District court to first degree murder during commission of a felony.
He also pleaded no contest to two counts of child abuse in connection with the 2011 beating death of 14-month-old Clayden Lee Urbanek.
He will now face additional charges of aggravated escape from custody.

My understanding was the sheriff was to hold this meeting was he to busy being on television complaining about not having enought staff? Having enought staff had nothing at all to do with this escape. The people in charge of the murderer should have either left him in shackles or had someone outside the door where they kept him until he was moved to a cell. I also question whether the door ever was locked to begin with. Our sheriff is a sneaky fellow kind of like a shunk. He looks for opportunities kinda like sneaking behind the backs of the new county commissioners to get his seatbelt grant. This man should have not been allowed to run again for office this past November as he is way beyond retirement age and to old both physically and mentally for this position. Now his department has failed big time and cost us taxpayers alot of money for the mistake that was made.

There have been a long list of department failures the past 16 years he has been sheriff and it has come down to those living in the county no longer have adequite protection because he has continually had his deputies do radar rather than patrol and its a miricale if you see one of those fancy trucks come roaring down your dirt road.

Good job S.O., had a hiccup, all is good now. Stuff happens. But it is fun to come on here and read how the tough cool keyboard guys analyze it all. Comical. More to come from them, beginning, now.

If I ever get pulled over by a sheriff I am going to say it was a hiccup, all is good, sorry it was human error, it's just a mistake, and see if they let me out of the ticket.

Do not knock the sherriff. Mr Brown is back in custody. That is all that matters. I hope he spends the rest of his life behind bars. Tax payers get to pay for it. Wonderful!!!

Redneck, you're a loser. Sheriff K will have my vote for the next 10 elections if he runs. If you think you can do better, toss your hat into the ring and see if you can run an election any better than you can run your mouth. Great job, law enforcement !

The only loser is the sheriff to bad the bad guy did not run him over when he was leaving. You will never get pulled over by the sheriff because he never leaves his desk oh maybe a little bit but you will never see him out in the field on a daily basis. We have the same guy with all the names tlittle and risingr on here making comments again.

@tlamatus: Do you think those excuses would work for someone caught with drugs. "it was human error and will take step to correct the problem?" I'm so sorry that I was speeding when I past you, but I slowed down now so it's no problem now. No it would not. You are willing to give the Sheriff a free pass like it never happened, but it did. If Brown would have killed someone would you still be defending this incompetent sheriff's dept. In sheriff Glens own words "we have no idea what he is capable of." and now it's no big deal that a murder walked out of his jail. Next time someone might get killed and it could be you son or wife. Wake up and smell the roses this is not something that should be swepr under the rug because he is in custody for now.

I agree and the investigation is being done by his own staff and they are saying it will be an internal matter so none of us will never know what truly happened. How corrupt is this?

Let the cover up begin. I hope the county commissioners are paying attention to this as when they want help or support for anything costing taxpayers money for that department of facilities they can take a hike. Once that department is cleaned out and we have a new sheriff will a majority of us change our mines. This whole matter is now being dismissed as not being serious but it sure was serious enought at the time to lock down schools in the surrounding area's.

TheCleaner, apparently you're the thick one here. I meant no disrespect to Iamgonnagetyou on this. I was simply wanting them to clarify it. I really don't see many comments here that do a good job of clearing the issue. Most of them are sour grapes type comments, or the "sheep" as you eloquently put it. This forum, as well as Salina Post really serve no purpose but to let people anonymously bash anything.

Both of you are thick as to bashing anything or anyone why don't you all wake up and smell the roses. I cannot see how anyone can protect this sheriff on his latest stupid move an comments. Nor can I see how anyone can support giving out tickets instead of concentrating on crime especially when its running rampant. I will point these things out until some of you and the media stop playing up to the law enforcement heads as they do no wrong. Both of these guys should of been down the road years ago but they keep hanging on screwing up the good people they have under them and the community because they just do not realize the important things any longer.

TheCleaner should change their name to TheDeflector. Your comment after mine added nothing, but more anonymous rabble. Thank you for proving my point. I'm sure you'd never go to a commission meeting and speak your mind. You are a keyboard hero.
