Bill Would Force New Math, English Standards

The standards would replace the Common Core math and English standards adopted in 2010. The bill would specifically prohibit the state and school districts from using the Common Core standards or spending any money on them.
A Kansas House committee is considering a bill that would force the state education department to write new math and English standards.
The standards would replace the Common Core math and English standards adopted in 2010. The bill would specifically prohibit the state and school districts from using the Common Core standards or spending any money on them.
Deputy education commissioner Brad Neuenswander told the education board Wednesday that writing new standards and tests to go with them would take two years and cost millions of dollars.
Some opponents of the standards argue that the federal government pressured Kansas into adopting them.
But the education department says the standards are state-driven and will ensure better math and English instruction.

So... let me get this straight... They want to pass one bill limiting the court's power to dictate fair funding for schools and another bill to tell educators what to teach. An example of irony? I think so. One of the main points of Common Core was so that states would be more on "the same page" for college and career readiness... so that if a student moved from one state to another, they wouldn't be going from apples to oranges but apples to apples or oranges to oranges... for example. What one state viewed as "Proficient" for AYP and NCLB could be totally different... i.e. either lower or higher... in another state. Common Core has been designed to try to prevent this. Thank you, legislators... yet another way to waste our time and money... I'd tell you to stick with what you know but lately, that doesn't really leave you many options.

Using a calculator as the end educational goal means your kid will end up in a job running the cash register in a place like Walmart! Yup, that's probably what our current Tea Party legislators want for them.

Sometimes even telling them how much change to give you back presents a problem. I don't know how many times at different business's I had to help them to get the right change due me. God forbid if there is a power failure.
