Kansas High Schools wrapped up fall sports this past weekend with the exception of football and soccer.
Volleyball
At the state volleyball tournament the only area team to advance out of pool play of Friday was Abilene. On day one, Sacred Heart was fulminated from 2A after falling to Oberlin 25-12, 25-22, and to Valley Heights 25-20, 25-20. Sacred Heart did score a win against Spearville 25-21, 25-18 to finish pool play at 1-2. In class 5A, Salina South also failed to advance from pool play, losing to Bishop Miege 25-8, 23-25, 25-6, to Lansing, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19, and to Bishop Carroll, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, to finish 0-3 in pool play. Abilene entered as the top seed in 4A, however they suffered a loss to St. James Academy 25-13, 25-12. In finishing pool play 2-1 they scored wins over Paola, 26-24, 25-19, and against Girard 25-9, 25-19. On day two, Abilene fell to Topeka-Hayden in the semi-finals 25-15, 25-19, and in the consolation match to Cheney, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21.
Cross Country
In Class 5A at Rim Rock near Lawrence, Salina South's Maggie Vinson was the only competitor from the area. She finished 51st individually with a time of 17:41.19. In Class 4A, for Abilene, James Wilson finished 24th on the boys side and Haylee Steffen finished 8th for the Abilene girls. In Class 3A, the Minneapolis boys took second place, led by Collin Trickle's top time of 17:02.41, which was also good for an individual championship. Dillon Hackett's seventh place finish, Garret Daugherty's 14th place finish. Other area athletes in the top 30 included Josh Rankin of Ellsworth, eight place. In the 3A Girls race, Minneapolis took fifth as a team while Southeast of Saline took 10th. Leading the way was Minneapolis' Anna Trahan in ninth, Southeast's Courtney Sager in 16th, Kylie Gragg and Shelbi Hamilton finished 28th and 30th respectively for Minneapolis. In Class 2A, the Bennington boys took third place and the Sacred Heart boys took sixth. Leading the top 30 finishers was Sacred Heart's Cory Donley in 12th place, Bennington's Daniel Ellis in 18th, Josh Hicks in 20th, and Keegan Reeves in 22nd. Jacob Vandervort of SH also took 24th. In the 2A girls race, Bennington took the state title, while the Sacred Heart girls took fourth. Top individuals included a state title for Ally Balderston, and Sarah Faerber in 11th. For Bennington, Jilliam Stratman led the way in fourth, Sadie Gantvoort was 13th, Ariana Haag 26th, and Jackie Wagner was 28th. In 1A boys, Lincoln finished fourth and Tescott finished 12th, as Lincoln's James Farris led the way with a fourth place finish. The Lincoln girls also took fourth place as Kerra Cissne finished 10th and Jenna Farris finished 20th.
Soccer
The only area team still alive in a soccer regional over the weekend was Salina Central and their season ended with a loss in the regional championship 2-0 to Emporia.
