Salina firefighters save a dog from a mobile home fire Monday.
Crews were sent at around 2:30 in the afternoon to the report of a fire at 604 Rocket Avenue.
According to the fire department, the first arriving company reported heavy flames and smoke visible from the exterior. Due to the initial heat and flames coming from the front door of the residence an interior attack was not possible; crews broke out
a window on the opposing side of the fire to get a quick knock down so that entry could be made.
It was reported to there was a dog and cat possibly still inside. After an extensive search, a dog was located and brought out for treatment. It had sustained heavy smoke inhalation and was having difficult time breathing. The dog was given oxygen via the animal oxygen mask which was donated to the Salina Fire Department by the Saline County Animal Shelter roughly 2 years ago, the aide given by the crews was encouraging because the dog did come around and was able to be returned to its owner breathing on her own.
Crew later found a cat alive underneath some bedding material in a bedroom.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a neighboring mobile home. Although the fire was contained to the
residence, due to the amount of damage and the age of the mobile home, it will be a total loss.
The cause is under investigation.
