A Salina man wins a $20,000 lottery prize.
As a retiree, 72-year-old Charles Eanes of Salina enjoys taking it easy. As part of his laid back lifestyle, he enjoys playing the Kansas Lottery's most popular instant scratch game, Bonus Crossword.
Eanes was doing just that Wednesday when he noticed something unusual about one of the tickets.
"I thought to myself, 'I'm sure doing a lot of scratching on this one,'" he said. "I kept on scratching and uncovering more and more words. When I finally counted them up, there were ten. That meant a $20,000 prize, I couldn't believe it!"
After having the store verify his win, he called his family, who were all excited for him. Eanes himself was so excited that when he went to bed that night, he just lay there.
By the time Eames came to Lottery headquarters to claim his ticket, he had thought a lot about what he was going to do with the money.
"I'm going to pay off a few little bills, give some to my family, and put a little in the bank. I'm also going to make donations to Hospice and to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life," said Eanes.
Eanes is retired from the United States Air Force and Raytheon in Salina. A widower, he has three grown children and four grandchildren.
He purchased his lucky $2 ticket at Kwik Shop 744, located at 1727 W. Crawford Street in Salina.
