Coyotes compete in cross country, basketball, and soccer

CROSS COUNTRY VANCOUVER, WASH. - The Kansas Wesleyan Cross Country teams finished their 2009 season at the NAIA National Championships at the Fort Vancouver Historical Site on Saturday. The women, who were the KCAC's automatic qualifier to the championships finished 27th out of 32 teams in the meet. Senior Stacey Lastra was the top finisher for the Coyotes, finishing in 146th with a time of 20 13. Kara Walker was next for the Coyotes finishing in 166th with a time of 20 23, followed by Cherise Price in 191st with a 20 32, Shanda Anderson in 209th with a 20 44, Crystal Stegman in 277th with a 21 37 and Julina White was 310th with a 22 53. There were 330 individual runners in the race. On the men's side, Nathan Mesta was the top finisher for the Coyotes in 153rd with a 26 57, Jeremy Davies was 219th with a 27 35 and Ernie Cruz finished 241st with a 27 51. There were 323 runners in the men's race. SOCCER McKENZIE, TENN. - Kansas Wesleyan dropped a 3 1 decision to defending National Champion Bethel University on Saturday at the Bethel Soccerplex in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. It took until the 16th minute for the Bethel Wildcats to score the first goal. Emil Dorgeloh delivered a ball to Armando Orozco for the score. The Coyotes, who had been averaging 23 shots per match through the season were held to just two by a stiff Bethel defense. The Coyotes got their first shot of the match in the 26th minute by Hector Quezada. Bethel would lead 1 0 at the half. The cautions started flying in the second half as a total of seven cards were issued in the final 45 minutes. The first three were against the Coyotes before Mario Vila Boa received a yellow for Bethel in the 77th minute. Bethel (15 1 3) added two more goals in the second half as Cade Parton scored in the 52nd minute and Orozco got his second of the match in the 70th. Art Guizar concluded his KWU career scoring his 30th goal of the season in the 76th minute. He finishes the season just one goal short of Mike Dibbini's single season record of 31. Wesleyan (14 4 3) managed just two shots in the match, one by Quezada and the goal by Guizar. Diego Millan recorded five saves and allowed three goals between the pipes. Bethel, who will advance to the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Final Site in Fresno, Calif., had 12 shots, eight of them on goal. Vila Boa led the way with five and Orozco had three. Massimo Collu Marchese allowed one goal and had zero saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Wildcats. BASKETBALL PARKVILLE, MO. - After playing Johnson and Wales last night in Mabee Arena, it appeared the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes were a little tired upon hitting the floor for their 1 p.m. contest against the Park Pirates. Regardless, the Coyotes held on for a 63 53 win on Saturday at the Breckon Sports Center. Park took an early 2 0 lead but the Coyotes answered back taking a 6 2 lead on a three by Jamie Alexander with 16 53 left in the first half. Jasmine Kassanavoid used a three point play to get back within one with 16 37 left. The Coyotes would fight back and take a five point lead with 15 26 left on Alexander's layup. Park regained the lead with 13 23 to go on a steal and layup by Oasha White, but the Coyotes quickly answered back with a 6 0 run to take a 16 11 lead with 8 06 to go thanks to a free throw by Montric Santee. Robin Covington cut Wesleyan's lead to one at 16 15 with 7 15 to go in the half when the Coyote offense exploded. Fueled by a score by Stephanie Frost, the Coyotes went on an 13 2 run to take a 29 17 lead with 2 50 to go. Wesleyan would take a 36 23 lead into the break. Shelby Babcock gave the Coyotes a 15 point cushion, but the Pirates would cut the Wesleyan lead to as little as five at 43 38 with 13 54 to go on a bucket by Hilary Walker that capped a 9 0 run by Park. Montric Santee would score to stop the Park run and fuel the Coyotes' own 16 4 run that gave Wesleyan a 59 42 lead with 6 39 to go. Stefany Jones would get the Pirates within nine one more time at 59 50 but the Coyotes would regain as much as a 13 point advantage before finishing the game with the 63 53 advantage. Alexander led the Coyotes (5 2) with 17 points, while Damara Lewis added 14 and Santee had 12 as the Coyotes were 24 of 47 from the field for 51.1 percent. Santee led the Coyotes with seven rebounds. White led Park (0 7) with 13 points as the Pirates shot 35.6 percent from the floor on 21 of 59 shooting. Wesleyan is back in action on Tuesday in an exhibition game against Newman University at 6 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita. The early season struggles for the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes continued tonight as Wesleyan dropped a 62 52 decision to the Park Pirates on Saturday at Breckon Sports Center. The Pirates scored the first four points of the game, and would eventually build their lead to as many as 10 at 14 4 when coach Mike Davert was called for a technical foul with 12 11 left in the first half. Wesleyan would cut the lead to five, the last time at the 8 24 mark on a three by Bryson Flax to make it 19 14. Park would regain a 23 14 lead with 4 57 left in the first half on a free throw. The Coyotes would cut the margin to just one at the 2 39 mark when Mekan Moss would score to cap a 10 2 run that made it 25 24. Park would finish the half on a 6 0 run to take a 31 24 lead into intermission. Park (4 4) built its lead to as many as 14 with 16 34 to go in the second half on a steal and layup by Reco Anderson. Wesleyan didn't fade, cutting the lead to seven with 14 25 to go on a stick back by Willie McCarty. The Pirates would regain a 14 point lead on a three by Goldeng Deng with 5 28 left in the game, but the Coyotes fought back again, sparked by a Flax three, using an 8 0 run to get within six at 53 47 with 4 06 left. Wesleyan got within six one more time with one minute left, but the Pirates scored the final four points to grab the 62 52 win. Dickman led the Coyotes with 15, while Flax added 12 and Harvey had 11 as the Coyotes shot 19 of 58 from the floor for 32.8 percent. Harvey and Jarrett led the Coyotes with seven rebounds. Park was led by Herschel Rodgers with 20, while Deng had eight and four others had six. Rodgers also led the Pirates with seven rebounds. The Coyotes are off until Tuesday when the play the first of three straight exhibition contests against Washburn at 7 p.m., in Topeka.
