Sister Bernard Marie Schruben died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Mount Joseph Senior Community in Concordia. She was 90 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 68 years. She was born in Salina on July 3, 1921 to Leonard and Edna (McKanna) Schruben, the first of four children, and was baptized Margaret Teresa.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, on July 16, 1943. On March 18, 1944, Margaret received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Bernard Marie. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1945 and final vows on March 15, 1948.
Sister Bernard Marie received an AB in Music from Marymount College and an MS in Education/Reading in Primary Grades from Kansas State University. She taught in Silver City, NM; Pfeifer, Schoenchen, Antonino, Collyer, Aurora, Tipton and Junction City. In 1988 she retired to the Motherhouse and then to Mount Joseph Senior Community in 2006.
Sister Bernard Marie was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Katherine Becker.
She is survived by two brothers, Leo Schruben of Hays, John Schruben of Maryland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Bible Vigil Service will be held June 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Lucy Schneider as the eulogist.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be June 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Father James Hoover presiding.
The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
